More PCs with switchable graphics in 2009 to sport says Intel
In 2009, a lot more notebook PCs from Lenovo and other big manufacturers will implement Intel's game- and video-friendly Switchable Graphics, predicted Michael Trainor, chief technology evangelist at Intel. In 2009, a lot more notebook PCs from Lenovo and other big manufacturers will implement Intel's game- and video-friendly Switchable Graphics, predicted Michael Trainor, chief technology evangelist at Intel.
In a demo, the technology evangelist showed how the Centrino 2-based technology lets users switch between Intel's own built-in graphics and a graphics card from ATI, a division of Intel competitor AMD.
"You get the best of both worlds," Trainor said, speaking with Betanews at CES. Users can run the ATI card for applications such as 3-D games and video, which demand high-speed polygon rendering. Alternatively, you can use Intel's graphics to conserveenergy for "still" graphics and other applications.
Lenovo, Sony, and Toshiba are among the vendors that implemented Switchable Graphics in 2008. Lenovo's T400 Thinkpad, for example, uses the new technology."But typically, manufacturers started out by [implementing] Switchable Graphics on only one or two models. Now, you'll start to see [Switchable Graphics] across broader segments of their line-ups," Betanews was told.
Trainor acknowledged that there's one hitch, at this point. You can't switch back to Intel graphics while a 3-D game is running, for instance. "But you probably wouldn't want to do that, anyway," he noted. "And we'll be perfecting the technology in future generations."
Intel's own built-in graphics consume only about one-half the energy of ATI's, according to the Intel exec.
Meanwhile, Intel's been focusing on anti-aliasing and other technologies for enhanced visual quality in still graphics.
Intel conducted the demo at CES on a notebook PC running Intel Core 2 Quad (Q9000) mobile processor technology for Centrino 2. Aside from ATI, Nvidia is another graphics hardware manufacturer that's rolled out an implementation of Switchable Graphics.

Under the agreement, AT&T's 3G service — the nation's fastest 3G network — is available on a full range of Lenovo ThinkPad notebooks, which come factory-equipped with Ericsson built-in mobile broadband modules that are enabled for AT&T LaptopConnect. The service provides extensive broadband access both domestically and internationally.
All three of the ThinkPad SL notebooks and all notebooks in Lenovo's T and X series are included in the offering. Customers who purchase the ThinkPad notebooks with the embedded mobile broadband and establish an account with AT&T will receive 30 days of free AT&T DataConnect service. The notebooks are sold directly through www.lenovo.com.The agreement provides significant opportunity for small and medium businesses, in particular, to meet their needs for wireless PC connectivity. Among the highlights of the service are:
1. Exceptional coverage — AT&T 3G service is available today in more than 320 major U.S. metropolitan areas, and by year-end, AT&T expects to offer 3G coverage in nearly 350 major metro areas. AT&T customers can also use their AT&T-powered notebooks in more than 150 countries, including more than 60 countries with 3G networks. Additionally, Lenovo has designed multiple antennas and maximized its placement in the new ThinkPad notebooks to achieve enhanced wireless performance.
2. Fast access — AT&T LaptopConnect subscribers can realize typical download speeds between 700 kilobits per second (Kbps) and 1.7 megabits per second (Mbps). Typical uplink speeds range between 500 Kbps and 1.2 Mbps. Ericsson's integrated mobile broadband modules for high speed packet access (HSPA) will enable access to these speeds in the new notebooks.
3. Upfront IT savings — The new ThinkPad notebooks with AT&T LaptopConnect are available at approximately the same price as a Lenovo notebook without high speed mobile broadband technology, a savings of up to $150 per notebook from previous pricing.
4. Long-term IT savings — Users can enjoy their embedded mobile broadband service throughout the life of the notebook. A recent report by Gartner found "that 3G service offerings are becoming sufficiently stable to enable an embedded notebook solution to last three years without an upgrade."
The announcement comes as wireless data use and the adoption of high speed mobile broadband connectivity on notebook computers continue to skyrocket. Gartner forecasts embedded modem sales to have a compound annual growth rate of 94.3 percent worldwide from 2008 to 2012.

Lenovo, the giant Chinese electronics manufacturer mainly known for producing desktop PCs and laptops, announced it will quit the mobile phone industry and sell its mobile divisionfor $100 million to Legend Holdings Ltd., one of its main shareholders.
2007 was a great financial year for Lenovo, with overall profits of $171 million, a huge increase when compared to 2006's profits that raised to $57.7. Despite this, the company's mobile business is far from being profitable, as it made losses of 134 million CNY (about $18.6 million) in the last year.
Lenovo entered the mobile business in 2001 and limited its handset distribution to China, but in the last years it started producing devices based on Windows Mobile with the intention of penetrating other markets, like Europe and North America. However, this did not happen, and the Lenovo handsets remained in China. Apparently, the Chinese market – where phones from Nokia and Motorola have a huge demand – is not suitable for Lenovo's mobile plans, otherwise the company's losses cannot be explained.
Lenovo is currently the world's fourth largest personal computer manufacturer, after HP (Hewlett-Packard), Dell and its Taiwan-based neighbor Acer. It reached this position after acquiring IBM's PC division, back in 2005. By selling its mobile branch, Lenovo will be able to concentrate on its main PC business, at the same time allowing the mobile business to overcome the loss-generating period and re-think its market strategies.
After completing the acquisition of Lenovo Mobile, Legend Holdings will continue to produce handsets under the Lenovo brand and will probably try to conquer a bigger portion of the Chinese market share. Also, we might see Lenovo phones expand to Europe and North America, as initially planned.
