Lock your stolen Laptop with an SMS

Lenovo will offer companies a new solution to protect their sensitive data during the flight or the loss of one of their laptops. They need only send an SMS to block access.

Lenovo, the fourth global manufacturer of computers behind Hewlett-Packard, Dell and Acer, is preparing to launch a solution to protect sensitive data professionals laptops stolen or lost. Dubbed "Constant Secure Remote Disable" and running on the ThinkPad computers equipped with Intel Centrino 2, it will require downloading a small utility from the manufacturer's Web site and updating the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) of the machine.In case of loss or theft, the owner will simply send an SMS to the laptop from one of the 10 issues that may be associated with the machine (in a company, a computer can be used by several people), which will be to extinguish it and to initiate data encryption of the hard disk. When the laptop will be blocked, the user will be alerted by an SMS in return. When the computer is found, suffice it to unlock with a password.

The computer must be equipped with 3G SIM card will still be present when sending SMS and the machine will be located in an area covered by the network.

This solution will be offered free of charge and available by the end of the year or early next year.
