HP has launched the Compaq Presario CQ 2000 desktop series in India.Touted as a space saving device designed for the modern households the PC comes with a 15" TFT monitor and Compaq My Bhasha software, a communication enabler providing vernacular interface. Currently all netbook manufacturers are pounding the market with a barrage of netbooks. The intervening lull between successive netbook models is constantly shrinking, leaving consumers spoilt for choice and a tad overwhelmed.HP is about to launch a new netbook, the Mini-note 2140, in February but a report about its successor has already emerged. Its successor, the Mini-note 2150, will have at least one additional feature in form of a built-in 3G modem, according to Digitimes. The 2150 is rumoredto be scheduled for a June launch. Nothing else is currently known about the 2150.
The 10.1-inch Mini-note 2140 will be launched in February with prices beginning at $500.

HP’s TouchSmart line of all-in-one desktop computers has undergone quite a transformation since we examined the very first model, the IQ770, nearly two years ago. Not only is every change for the better, but HP has managed to slash prices by several hundred dollars.The formfactor is the most obvious change to the TouchSmart line: The IQ770 was like a monitor stuck on top of a pizza box; the new series looks like an oversize picture frame. Apple, Dell, and Gateway have all taken this tack with their all-in-one offerings, but HP’s engineers also designed the TouchSmart like an easel. By using three feet to support the computer, the company was able to carry over the IQ770’s handy keyboard garage concept (providing a space below the CPU for keyboard storage), but it’s impossible to casually adjust this display’s tiltangle. We loved the fact that we could use the IQ770 while either sitting or standing, but you can’t stand in front of the IQ506 unless it’s on a bar-height counter.
HP sells three preconfigured TouchSmart models. We reviewed the middle offering—the $1,500 IQ506t—which features a 22-inch touch-screen, a 2.16GHz mobile Intel Core2 Duo CPU, a discrete videocard, and a 500GB hard drive.
The TouchSmart achieves its impressively thin profile (it’s just three inches thick) by using many components that were designed for notebook PCs, including an external power supply. This helps keep the rig cool and extremely quiet at the expense of performance, at least when compared to a conventional desktop rig. You need to find a good hiding place for that brick, too.
The TouchSmart’s main attractions, its touch screen and the user interface associated with it, have been radically improved. The screen supports multi-touch gestures, for instance, and the user interface can display an unlimited number of tiles (which serve the same function as shortcut icons in the Windows GUI). The silly three-slot limit on user-created tiles has also been eliminated. HP doesn’t make much use of multi-touch features at this point, though; you can use two fingers to resize tiles, but that’s about it. HP got rid of the stylus, but there’s no need to worry about fingerprints smeared all over that huge LCD. The screen is covered by a sheet of protective glass that the documentation says can be cleaned with “typical household glass cleaner.”
The keyboard is a vast improvement over the one that shipped with the IQ770; it feels very solid and delivers excellent tactile feedback while being just a half-inch thick. HP augmented the Analog Devices SoundMax HD-audio chip with signal-processing software from Sonic Focus to deliver much-improved audio.
The TouchSmart application software is a mixed bag: The music and video programs aren’t terrible, but the photo editor is far too basic and the calendar can’t synchronize with a smartphone (it will, however, automatically sync with Windows Vista Calendar. Woo hoo!).
We’ll sum up by repeating what we said about the first-generation TouchSmart: It would be a big mistake to make the IQ506t your one-and-only PC: It’s just not powerful enough for gaming, heavy-duty photo or video editing, or many other enthusiast applications. But it is an absolutely fabulous family computer and media center.

Back in late October, when Hewlett-Packard first introduced its latest addition to the netbook range of products, the company was said to be planning the release of yet another small-sized, portable computer system that would only be meant to compete in the European market. Said laptop was expected to come out as the Compaq Mini 700, pretty much offering the same technical specifications as the newly-launched Mini 1000. HP took its time in releasing the Compaq Mini 700, but the netbook is now apparently available in Europe and has already received a full bunch of tests and benchmarks, to provide interested users with detailed information on its capabilities.Early last week, the system was announced in Europe as the new netbook on the market. This was roughly at the same time the Compaq Mini 700 was reviewed and benchmarked by the guys over at notebook italia. Aside from providing the results ofa series of tests, the Italian site had also dedicated an entire segment of the article specifically to the disassembling of the netbook, consequently providing users with an alternative view inside a system that was designed for ultra-portability and Internet-related applications.

Due to show up at the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show in 2009, the new HP Firebird 803 designed by Voodoo has surfaced early with leaked photos and specifications. Unlike the previous firebird, this design is much smaller, however it does come with its draw backs. To get such a small design, the entire unit is custom built and appears to follow no standard layout or format, i.e ATX, BTX, etc. As such one would imagine that upgrading components would be very limited, so this is more likea laptop or games console in which what you buy is what your stuck with. The tower also appears to be watercooled, but to further reduce the size and heat output, the power supply has been made external and judging by the pictures it's roughly twice the size of a normal laptop power supply.Specifications:

HP has begun shipping 300GB 2.5″ 10,000 RPM SAS (Serial-Attached SCSI) hard drives.Produced in association with Seagate, these new SAS drives use 75% less energy and are 70% smaller than 3.5″ SAS drives. This means that storage arrays can be more efficient, cooler and have higher capacities. Previously the largest 2.5″ SAS drive was 146GB, while 3.5″ SAS drives peak at 450GB.
The only drawback of these drives is that the RPM is limited to 10K, while the sweet-spot forenterprise storage is currently 15,000 RPM. Still, the space and energy saving should appeal to data centers looking to save money or increase capacity without increasing server volume.

Dubbed "Constant Secure Remote Disable" and running on the ThinkPad computers equipped with Intel Centrino 2, it will require downloading a small utility from the manufacturer's Web site and updating the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) of the machine.In case of loss or theft, the owner will simply send an SMS to the laptop from one of the 10 issues that may be associated with the machine (in a company, a computer can be used by several people), which will be to extinguish it and to initiate data encryption of the hard disk. When the laptop will be blocked, the user will be alerted by an SMS in return. When the computer is found, suffice it to unlock with a password.
The computer must be equipped with 3G SIM card will still be present when sending SMS and the machine will be located in an area covered by the network.
This solution will be offered free of charge and available by the end of the year or early next year.

As predicted, HP today announced that they will immediately begin taking orders for the TouchSmart TX2, the first multi touch laptop widely available to consumers. The laptop, priced starting at $1,199, will begin shipping at the end of November.The TX2’s multi touch interface will work with any program that already supports multi touch, as well as with HP’s integrated MediaSmart media suite. The laptop features an array of gestural controls, including all of the multi touch standards, like pinch-zooming and two finger rotation, as well as the ability to open MediaSmart at any time by drawing an “m” on the screen with both fingers. The screen uses capacitance-based touch detection and is designed to accept input either from the pad of a finger or from a built-in digital pen.
With a 12.1 inch screen and weighing in at 4.3 pounds, the TX2 is physically nearly identical to its predecessor, the TX2000. The only thing differentiating the two visually is the TX2’s glossy, charcoal-colored finish and “Reaction Imprint” design.All but the cheapest loadouts of the TX2 come equipped with Turion X2 dual-core processors. All models will ship with Radeon HD 3200 integrated graphics, and consumers can opt for up to 8GB of DDR2 SDRAM and 500GB of hard disk storage. The laptop also features a webcam and optional fingerprint reader.

Back when boutique OEM system builders operated as standalone entities, owning a custom built rig by the likes of a Voodoo PC often required a hefty investment up to several times more than what you could expect to pay if going the DIY route. This scenario has changed somewhat in recent years thanks in part to falling hardware prices and acquisitions by mainstream OEMs. Such is the case with Voodoo PC, who was acquired by HP back in 2006. More recently, HP decided to merge its Voodoo PC unit with its consumer business unit, a move that Raul Sood, CTO for HP's Global Gaming Business, said would "ultimately mean that Voodoo and Voodoo-influenced products will be easier to buy, faster get, they will feature local service, and they have the full power of HP's marketing and sales channel behind them."Fast forward to today and HP is making good on Sood's promise. Effective immediately, the price of the Voodoo Envy 133 drops a couple of C-notes from $2,100 to $1,900. As an added bonus, each Envy shipped will also include a second battery at no additional charge, an offer that stands until November 30. On the desktop side, the HP Blackbird 002 also gets a price cut and can now be had for $1,800.Could the days of high-priced boutique builds be nearing an end? Hewlett-Packard Co., aiming to boost its personal computer sales amid a deteriorating economy and soft holiday season, is increasingly turning to touch-screen technology.The computer giant is now developing a consumer notebook machine with a touch screen that will debut before year end, said people familiar with the matter. It will include special H-P software that supports the touch screen, but other details, such as pricing, remained unclear.The new laptop is the latest in a series of touch-oriented devices, including an upcoming line of cellphones, that will become a priority of H-P's consumer strategy as it tries to differentiate itself from rivals such as Dell Inc., these people said.
H-P began promoting touch screens last year with a big-screen desktop computer called the TouchSmart. The Palo Alto, Calif., company introduced a revamped TouchSmart this year, with new software and a new external design and has recently ramped up its effort to market the computer.

Roger Kay, a PC-industry analyst with Endpoint Technologies, said H-P is trying to create a new market with its focus on touch, since there's no established market for such products other than Apple Inc.'s iPhone. Tablet PCs, or touch-screen laptops, "haven't done that well" in the past, he added.
H-P's touch-screen effort is being led by executives such as Phil McKinney, the PC division's chief technical officer. Mr. McKinney has been working on PC software that masks Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system, and has hired the design company Frog Design to help develop new touch software and hardware. The TouchSmart desktop was the first result of that project.
An H-P spokeswoman declined to detail forthcoming products, though she acknowledged H-P is "building a whole family of touch" devices that will be released in the future.
The new touch-screen notebook comes in time for a holiday sales season that's expected to drag heavily on PC makers. While the end-of-year season is usually the strongest for consumer PC sales, "we're looking at a pretty gloomy outlook" this year, said Mika Kitagawa, an analyst at research firm Gartner.
On Tuesday, Gartner said world-wide PC shipments grew 15% in the third quarter. While Gartner had previously predicted a 14% fourth-quarter jump in consumer PC shipments, the research firm will likely lower that forecast to reflect the weakening economy, said Ms. Kitagawa.
Much of the growth that Gartner does anticipate will come from low-end mini-notebooks, or "netbooks," said Ms. Kitagawa. Netbooks can access the Internet and perform basic PC functions, but usually sell for $500 or less, half as much as many full-sized laptops.
To capitalize on netbook growth, H-P is planning to introduce a new netbook with a 10-inch screen this year, said people familiar with the matter. The netbook won't feature a touch screen. H-P has been selling a smaller netbook geared toward schools since earlier this year.
While H-P started selling a touch-screen laptop last year, Mr. Kay said the company put relatively little effort into marketing it. People familiar with H-P's current plans said the company will be more aggressive with its new products.
These people said H-P is also working on a line of consumer cellphones that feature touch screens and the first such phone will be introduced in Europe this year. H-P plans to start selling the phones through a U.S. cellular carrier within the next year or so.
