Intel rises hope for its Moorestwon MID Platform
ince Intel launched the Atom platform the netbook market has significantly increased, providing users and PC vendors alike with a new computer category, specifically focused on delivering a rich Internet experience and on-the-go computing. However, the success level of the Atom processor might soon be overtaken by one of Intel's upcoming products, which is targeted at the growing market for Mobile Internet Devices. This will be an area where Intel's Moorestown chip will have to compete with some other chip makers, like ARM or VIA. However, the Santa Clara, California-based global leading chip maker is confident that its chip will succeed in surpassing those of its competitors. In a recent news-article on the Inquirer, Pankaj Kedia, Intel's Director of the MID program, sat down and detailed his view on the company's MID platform. “Moorestown will give you the opportunity not only to experience the Internet in its full glory but will also have voice capability” said Kedia. He also added “I call it the ‘Next Smartphone’, the smart smartphone.”
The chip, according to Kedia, will be capable of providing the end-user with support for the Internet, gaming, personal navigation, multimedia and all of the features that you require from your everyday smartphone.
The Moorestown platform is slated for release next year, the first device being the fruit of the collaboration between the chip giant and LG Electronics. The two companies are currently collaboratingon the upcoming Moorestown-based LG MID running Moblin 2.0. Unfortunately, the exact details of when the MID will become available have not yet been disclosed.
In regard to the competition between Intel and ARM, Kedia said that, because Intel's platform would be based on x86 architecture, users would be able to fully benefit from the Internet experience, while the ARM architecture “is not compatible at the architectural level and is not compatible at the implementation level” said Kedia.
It is clear that Intel is planning its products to be in almost everything you own, which consequently means that other chip makers might have a tough time ahead of themselves, trying to compete with the Chipzilla.

, has unveiled the R4870-MD1G and R4870-MD512 graphics cards. MSI designed these two cards to be perfect for gamers demanding performance, quality, and low-temperature operation by equipping them with an extra large fan, an extra cool cooling system, and extra long lifespan components. The entire card features best class solid capacitors and SSC (solid-state chokes) built-in to the design that helps to smoothly handle high-power levels and punch-out amazing performance. The solid design also helps to extend the cards total lifespan. Featuring all three - HDMI, DVI and D-Sub (VGA) - major display output, these two cards are sure to please those looking for big-screen LCD monitor or LCD TV display.Extra large 9cm fan
The R4870-MD1G and R4870-MD512 both equip a surprisingly large 9cm fan which provides high heat dissipation with low noise. The majority of graphics cards use an 8cm fan, which, when running at around 3500~3800 rpm, can create 35 cubic feet per minute (CFM) of air flow along with a rather loud noise. However, the R4870-MD1G and R4870-MD512's 9cm large fan runs about 1000 rpm less (~2800 rpm) and produces a whopping 56 CFM air flow. This difference is a 60% increase in efficiency, while, at the same time, creating a quieter environment becauseof the slower speed. The two cards also equip a copper base, big heatsink area and dual heatpipes design. Coupled with the enlarged fan, compared to reference design, this total cooling solution can lower the ATI 4870 card's average temperature down by 20°C! Who said the ATI Radeon HD 4870 is a heat monster? MSI is able to offer a cool and quiet model to this famous card using its unique cooling system design.
Extra long lifespan capacitors
High performance graphics cards consume a lot of power. No exception, the ATI Radeon HD 4870 cards use two PCI-Express (PCIe) power connectors for power. A power supply's stability and instability will have a direct impact on the total lifespan, stability and overclocking capabilities of a graphics card. The R4870-MD1G and R4870-MD512 equip the best class solid capacitors; the design ensures a 5000 hour lifespan under 105°C environment. This lifespan doubles for every 10 degrees below 105°C. Using this figure, the average gamer could play eight hours of games every day on the card for over 10 years! The solid capacitor design makes the R4870-MD1G and R4870-MD512 very long-lived graphics cards.
SSC (Solid State Choke)
The power module of R4870-MD1G and R4870-MD512 is equipped with the latest Solid State Choke (SSC) for more stable operation. The vast majority of chokes is made by wrapping coils around a metal stick and use an electro-magnetic flow to ensure a stable flow of electricity. However, these types of chokes have a drawback when high current is run through that can result in unpleasant noise because of unbalanced material density. This 'electrical mummer' can sometimes be even louder than the fan.
MSI has taken the lead by implementing a new SSC with form-in-one, even density across the choke. No separate components were attached, just a solid piece of iron, and SSC doesn't produce any unpleasant noise under high current. Additionally, this SSC choke is made to withstand the highest current, making the R4870-MD1G and R4870-MD512 ideal for overclocking. Solid State Chokes also helps reduce energy waste of manufacture and represents another effort of MSI to help protect the planet.
Native HDMI ports supporting Blu-ray
The R4870-MD1G and R4870-MD512 offer HDMI, DVI and D-Sub (VGA) ports. HDMI not only delivers breathtaking visuals, but also supports true, hi-def sound. Bundled with ATI Radeon HD 4870 that supports UVD 2.0 video decoder engine, these two cards are perfect for Blu-ray movies playback on any type of screen, and support the latest DirectX 10 games.
MSI International pays close attention to the components and cooling technology of its graphics cards. Building on MSI's continued breakthroughs in technological development, the R4870-MD1G and R4870-MD512 represent a new level for MSI's graphics cards' prowess. Even though the ATI Radeon HD 4870 GPU is known for being a hot-running, loud card, MSI was able to re-think its architecture and develop a cool and quiet solution. The R4870-MD1G and R4870-MD512 are sure to appeal gamers seeking powerful performing graphics.

Filed Under: AMD, athlohttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifn, chipset, processor
Quad-Core processors are all the rage these days, but with the economy down and out people might want to take another look at dual-core processors to keep your household budget intact. AMD is today announcing the Athlon X2 7750 – a STARS-based (Phenom 65nm core) processor that is a brand new dual-core processor based on the Kuma core. Since this processor is based off the Phenom core it has L3 cache, this should make it competitive in terms of both price and performance to the $82.99 Intel E5200 dual-core processor. The AMD Athlon X2 7750 is launching today with a $79 price tag when bought in 1000-unit tray quantities, so it is priced directly against the Intel E5200. It has been a long time since we havelooked at a dual-core processor on launch day, so lets get right to it.The AMD Athlon X2 7750 is a dual-core processor with a 2.7GHz clock frequency. This is a Black Edition processor, which means that even though it comes set at 200MHz x 13.5, it has an unlocked multiplier that you can change for improved overclocking. The Athlon X2 7750 has 2 x 512MB of L2 Cache and 2MB shared of L3 Cache. This is a huge step up from the older Athlon X2's that had the same amount of L2 Cache, but no L3 Cache. The AMD Athlon X2 7750 uses the same HyperTransport 3.0 bus that Phenom processors use as it is based off the same core. The Athlon X2 7750 has the HT set to run at 1800MHz an will work just fine in any socket AM2+ motherboard. The X2 7750 features a maximum Thermal Design Power (TDP) of 95 Watts, which means that it should be able to work in nearly any motherboard with the proper socket. The picture above shows all 940 pins that are needed for the Athlon X2 7750 processor to operate. To compare the Athlon X2 7750 to something recent on the dual-core front we will be looking at the Athlon X2 5050e as well. On October 21st, 2008, AMD launched the Athlon 64 X2 5050e processor, which is based on the 65nm Brisbane core. The AMD Athlon 64 X2 5050e processor is clocked at 2.60GHz and has a TDP rating of just 45 Watts at the highest peak power. The Athlon X2 5050e is wildly popular for Small Form Factor (SFF) and Home Theater Personal Computers (HTPCs) as the low TDP means that it puts out less heat and consumes less power than other processors in its class. At $61 when bought in 1000-unit tray quantities, it costs 23 less than the Athlon X2 7750, but has less cache, a 100MHz lower core clock and an older and slower HyperTransport. It is interesting to point out that the 5050e and 7750 that we are testing here today were made just one week apart and yet the 5050e came out two months ago.

Intel finalized 32 nm
By Koushik Saha on 12.12.08
Filed Under: 32 nm processor, AMD, core i7, CPU, gpu, Intel, motherboard, Nehalem Chipset, processor, sram

The first 45 nm processor Intel was unveiled in October 2007, was the Core 2 Extreme QX9650. In mid-November 2008, Intel introduced its new architecture, Nehalem, with the Core i7, always engraved in 45 nm. To follow the agenda of its tick-tock (a new fine etching / a new architecture a year, alternating), the manufacturer will have to disclose the process of burning 32 nm next year. The roadmaps show the "Westmere", a development of 32 nm "Bloomfield" (the Core i7), scheduled for Q4 2009. And obviously, "Sandy Bridge" with a new architecture, landing in 2010. All this seems on track ...
You should know that Intel is preparing a new finesse burning in three stages, the research, development and production. In September, the foundryfoundry announced it had produced a first chip SRAM in 32 nm. Today, Intel indicate that the development of this fine etching and her forthcoming production. The world's leading manufacturer of x86 processors is on time and for the moment everything is going well for the 32 nm.
AMD, which has just introduced its first server processors in 45 nm and declination preparing their public for January, should keep a good year behind Intel. The manufacturer should not break its 32 nm server CPU before the end of 2010, and the general public will have to wait 2011. AMD has also recently indicated that instead of the 44% originally planned, it has only 34% of The Foundry Company, the rest being provided by investors from Abu Dhabi.

The most important update is about a new code name, Medfield. It is the 2H/2010 32nm successor to Lincroft, part of the Moorestown platform. The interesting thing about this code is while Moorestown and the current Menlow platforms have a CPU + chipset, Medfield will be an all in one package.
Medfield will be offered in two variants, one with handheld level graphics, the other with netbook graphics. As per speculations, the netbook variant will usea version of the current Intel integrated GPU, and the handheld version will carry on with a PowerVR core.
In addition, Atom sales have the potential to open new markets. They are win-win package for the market.
Related to this, recently a update indicated that AMD can loose market on grounds of absence of netbook chips.

Intel announced completionof 32nm Process Development Phase
By Koushik Saha on 10.12.08
Filed Under: 32nm process technology, hardware, Intel, processor, ssd
Intel announced that it had completed the development phase of its next-generation manufacturing process that further shrinks chip circuitry to 32 nanometers. The company said that it is on track for production readiness of this future generation using even more energy-efficient, denser and higher performing transistors in the fourth quarter of 2009.
The company will provide technical details around the 32nm process technology along with several other topics during presentations at the International Electron Devices meeting (IEDM) next week in San Francisco.
Finishing the development phase for the company's 32nm process technology and production readiness in this timeframe means that Intel remains on pace with its ambitious product and manufacturing cadence referred to as the company's "tick-tock" strategy.
That plan revolves around introducing an entirely new processor microarchitecture alternating with a cutting edge manufacturing process about every 12 months.
The Intel 32nm paper and presentation describe a logic technology that incorporates second-generation high-k + metal gate technology, 193nm immersion lithography for critical patterning layers and enhanced transistor strain techniques. These featuresenhanced transistor strain techniques. These features enhance the performance and energy efficiency of Intel processors. Intel's manufacturing process has the highest transistor performance and the highest transistor density of any reported 32nm technology in the industry, the company claims.
"Our manufacturing prowess and resulting products have helped us widen our lead in computing performance and battery life for Intel-based laptops, servers and desktops," said Mark Bohr, Intel Senior Fellow and director of process architecture and integration. "As we've shown this year, the manufacturing strategy and execution have also given us the ability to create entirely new product lines for MIDs, CE equipment, embedded computers and netbooks."
Other Intel IEDM papers will describe a low power system on chip version of Intel's 45nm process, transistors based on compound semiconductors, substrate engineering to improve performance of 45nm transistors, integrating chemical mechanical polish for the 45nm node and beyond; and, integrating an array of silicon photonics modulators. Intel will also participate in a short course on 22nm CMOS Technology.

According to the latest reports on the Web, Intel added a few more CPUs to its mainstream and value lineups, all based on previous architectures from the company, and not on the newly released Nehalem. The additions include the Core 2 Quad Q8300, the Pentium Dual Core E5300 and the Celeron Dual Core E1500 processors. The Q8300 chip has been discussed already, so we'll detail the other parts that the Santa Clara chip maker has released for users. The Intel Pentium Dual Core E5300 CPU is based on the company's Wolfdale-2M, and features 2 MB of L2 cache and a clock speed of 2.60 GHz (13.0 * 200 MHz), while coming with an FSB of 800 MHz. The price of this part will be set at $86, taking the place of the maker's E5200 chip. The Celeron Dual Core E1500 chip came to the market to steal the crown of the Celeron series. The CPU is clocked at 2.20 GHz and an L2 cache of 512 KB. Based on the older 65nm Allendale core, this chip costs $53.In related news about the chip manufacturer, we learn that its Havendale processor will be delayed until the first quarter of 2010. The chip, as said before, will include a CPU and a GPU, and it has been suggested that the company is having troubles with the implementation of the two, which caused the delay.
Intel has officially announced that the “Havendale schedule is being adjusted to intercept Q1’2010 retail and business cycles with production beginning in Q4’09.” The news site Fudzilla says that the company's official line hides the fact that it won't be able to deliver the chip on time.
The same source also says that bit OEMs should announce systems based on Havendale at CES that year, while starting the shipments a little later. Intel's Lynnfield chip, originally slated for release at the same time with Havendale, should arrive in Q4 2009.

Intel to bring Axe Core 2 Quad Q6600 in 2009
For a long while, Intel's Core 2 Quad Q6600 processor remained a popular choice in the DIY community. The 2.4GHz chip, helped in part by an aggressive round of price-cuts, brought quad-core computing to the mainstream. It became even more popular when Intel released the G0 stepping, which ushered in lower temps and higher overclocking potential. But there's no looking in the rear-view mirror for Intel, and with the chip maker's Core i7 stepping into the limelight, it's come time to retire the aging 65nm Q6600. Citing un-named sources at PC vendors, DigiTimes reports that Intel plans to phase out the vintage quad-core chip in Q1 2009 by issuing a product discontinuance notice. The Q6600's impending end-of-life could come as good news to those in need of a quad-core upgrade while remaining fiscally responsible. In all likelihood, vendors will again cut the Q6600's price as they look to clear out inventory before the end of the year. Stocking stuffer, perhaps?

Advanced Micro Device's upcoming Phenom II X4 processor keeps on surprising us these days with its overclocking capabilities. Only a few days ago it was reported to enter POST while clocked over 5GHz; this time we learn that it has managed to reach 6.3GHz while remaining stable. It seems that the company wanted to keep this number unofficial, and asked people to change it to “more than 5GHz”.The latest news on the Web shows that the upcoming Deneb chip is at least capable of delivering speeds close to 6GHz, if not surpassing that barrier. No information regarding the system used to test the speed has been published or anything on the cooling solution used, yet it appears that some people managed to make it work quite stable at 5920MHz. Even so, the chip is capable of amazing speeds, out pacing even Intel's Core i7, which is known to have been pushed to 5.3GHz.The Sunnyvale company failed a few times before while going against Intel's Core 2 Duo and Quad Core chips, yet it seems that these guys have managed to get things right. Phenom II X4 is the first desktop processor AMD releases under the 45nm process technology, but it comes one year after the first similar CPUs from Intel. Thus, the chip maker had to be sure everything was perfect, and all points towards the fact that it has succeeded.
Intel released its latest Core i7 chips under the new Nehalem architecture more than a week ago, and the CPU is doing very well on the performance charts, only that it may look rather expensive to some. The processor works only paired with an X58 motherboard, which means that users who wish to acquire the chip have to purchase the motherboard as well. AMD respected the rules of the game on the price part as well, and made the CPU compatible with the already existing AM2 and AM2+ motherboards, offering users a cheaper and faster upgrade process.
On related news, we learned that the Sunnyvale chip maker is planning to launch two Phenom II X4 models in January. The flavors will be AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition (HDZ940XCGIBOX), 3.00 GHz, Socket AM2+, 8 MB cache (2 MB total L2 + 6 MB L3), 125W TDP and AMD Phenom II X4 920 (HDX920XCGIBOX), 2.80 GHz, Socket AM2+, 8 MB cache (2 MB total L2 + 6 MB L3), 125W TDP.
