competition about to begin.......

Windows vs. Chrome OS, so it begins, or at least it’s about to. At the end of the past week, Google started sending out invitations to a Chrome team event on December 7th, 2010, in San Francisco.

The promise from the Mountain View-based search giant is that some exciting news about Chrome will be made public. No other details were offered, but the general consensus among various third-party sources seems to be that the event is related to Chrome OS.

Google’s open source Linux-based operating system has been cooking for some time now, and the company now seems closer than ever to place a foothold in Windows territory.

Speculation indicates that Google might ready a Beta preview of Chrome OS which would ship on a netbook offered to developers. However, this is not the actual general availability deadline of Chrome OS, which was postponed to 2011, with Google refusing to detail the reasons of the delay. Chrome OS was initially planned for availability by the end of 2010.

And Windows is about to get a new rival. Windows 7 at least, since, despite still being present on the market, Windows XP and Windows Vista are largely irrelevant in terms of new sales.

Just a few years ago, Google was launching the Chrome browser, and now the company is extremely close to the 10% mark of the market.

Granted the OS market is not as crowded as the browser one, and Windows is in a far more dominant position than Internet Explorer was when Google’s browser shipped, but if the success of Chrome is any indication, Microsoft needs to brace for impact.

Chrome OS comes with a new approach to the classic operating system model. There’s very little local storage, and there are no application programming interfaces (APIs) to support applications running locally.

Instead, Chrome OS is built for the Cloud, and is browser-centric, with the Chrome browser at the core. The user data, settings, content, applications sit in Google’s servers rather than being stored locally.

Meanwhile, Windows 7 still has the same Cloud connections as its predecessors, largely related to the Windows Live Essentials suite.

Microsoft does have the chance to push Windows 8 into the Cloud, linking it with Windows Azure, but there’s no telling whether the Redmond company will actually do it, or wait for the next version of Windows, after Windows 7’s successor.

Meanwhile, Google is extremely close to have the operating system rendered all but useless, and shift the focus entirely to the web.

Estimates indicate that Chrome OS will be available on netbooks in early 2011, but a release date has yet to be disclosed.

What’s interesting is that Chrome OS was created in a time when netbooks were extremely hot, which is no longer the case.

Consumers seem to prefer tablets / slates to netbooks more and more, especially for media consumption scenarios, and in this regard, Chrome OS might just have betted on a losing horse, at least in the long run.

And the operating system cannot simply be transitioned to tablets, since it’s not sufficiently touch-centric, but tailored to machines with keyboards instead.

Windows 7 dominates the netbook market for the time being, although it will take a while before slates sporting the OS will gain traction, and not until 2011 at the latest, even according to Microsoft estimates.

As far as netbooks are concerned, the Redmond company has won the OS war with Linux, and it did it with XP, before Windows 7 was launched.

Now Chrome OS comes to challenge Windows’ dominance, the shadow of Linux is still in the background, and it’s time for Microsoft to take on a new rival.

While the Exchange Server 2010 Deployment Assistant was made available to customers only days after the launch of Exchange Server 2010 in the first half of November 2009, the initial release was focused on a limited number of deployment scenarios. Earlier this week, Microsoft introduced additional upgrade scenarios for the Exchange Server 2010 Deployment Assistant, currently available on TechNet. Customers looking for assistance and guidance from Microsoft for the deployment process associated with the latest iteration of Exchange will need to access the Exchange Server 2010 Deployment Assistant on TechNet from a computer with Silverlight installed.

“In November, we launched the Exchange Server 2010 Deployment Assistant. In the initial version of the Deployment Assistant, content was available for customers upgrading from Exchange 2003. We are happy to announce that today we've released content for the following scenarios to [the tool]: upgrading from Exchange Server 2007; upgrading from a mixed Exchange Server 2003/2007 and new Exchange Server 2010 installation,” revealed Katie Kivett, MicrosoftExchange Deployment Assistant PM.

Exchange Server 2010 hit general availability on November 9, 2009, and has since then been up for grabs for customers worldwide. Designed to integrate seamlessly into infrastructures also containing Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, Exchange Server 2010 is capable of lowering costs by as much as 70%, according to Stephen Elop, president, Microsoft Business Division, who launched the product at Microsoft TechEd Europe 2009.

“The Deployment Assistant allows you to create Exchange 2010 deployment instructions that are customized to your environment. The Deployment Assistant asks a small set of questions, and based on your answers, it provides a set of instructions that are designed to get you up and running on Exchange 2010. Instead of reading dozens of topics in the Exchange 2010 library, you simply answer a few questions, and the Deployment Assistant gives you customized content to install Exchange 2010,” Kivett added.

Creative takes out HQ -1400 Headphone

Creative, a brand mainly known for its MP3 players and PC speakers, also has a decent line up of headphones, including these sleek looking new models, one of them being the HQ-1400. We have received it for review, so let’s check it out.

The design of these circumaural closed back headphones is quite robust with a tinge of gloss black on the outside of the cans and on the flap below the headband. The headband itself, along with the rest of the exoskeleton of the HQ-1400 is black matte finished. The fit and ergonomics of the product is really plush due to its soft cushion pads, it’s got a nice velvet feel. The adjustable headband adds to the comfort. The drivers are stated 40 mm, made of neodymium magnet with Copper Clad Aluminum wire voice coil - a proprietary term they use is CCAW. The impedance is 32 Ohms, and sensitivity is high enough at about 105 dB/mW. The cord length is really long at 3 m, also with a gold plated mini plug at the end. The frequency response rated is 20 Hz -20Khz.

The sturdy build and super clean finish really raised our expectation for the performance, and we were more or less satiated in that regard. The frequency response output consisted of deep lows, though not bang on tight in terms of timing. It was more of a large enveloping LF response. The mids and high were present in decent amounts, not overpowering in level and also not making the sound edgy.

Loudness wise the headphones are really impressive, a really sensitive response is on the cards. Moreover the output is audibly clean sounding, there is not too much discernible THD at the highest level.

The MRP of the Creative HQ 1400 is Rs. 1690, which is a decent price for the unit. It looks great due to its suave exterior, and for the price it has a good sound output. The main thing is the low bass and healthy loudness. The bass is not that tight, plus highs are not as refined and “airy”, but they add up well in toto. It’s a good buy for a music lover or multimedia enthusiast, looking for a reasonably priced pair of solid headphones.

Apple Tablet to Ship in March

Tech-industry sources are now focused on when Apple is launching the tablet, and what it will be like, rather than if the device even exists. The Wall Street Journal has an interview with one of the people claiming to have inside information on the elusive product, while another person “briefed on the matter” claims Apple is working on two different material finishes for the tablet’s enclosure.
MacRumors points out to the WSJ report citing people briefed by Apple saying the Mac maker “plans to unveil a new multimedia tablet device later this month,” but doesn't plan on shipping the product until March. “While the shipping time hasn't been finalized and could change, people briefed on the matter said the new tablet devicewill come with a 10- to 11-inch touch screen,” the report (subscription required) adds.

“[...] People briefed on the matter said the new product will come with a 10 to 11-inch touch screen—which would make it closer in size to Apple's line of MacBook laptops than its smart phone,” the same source reveals.

One of these people, apparently briefed by Apple on a deeper level, has reportedly learned that the Mac maker is experimenting with two different case materials for the tablet’s shell. It is unclear whether the company will choose one of them once it’s satisfied with the performance, or both of them, for design variety.

It is also being speculated that Apple is testing these materials to come out with multiple versions of the device at different price points. The product is expected to ship with a $1,000 price tag, justifying its multifunction nature for video, gaming, ebook functionality, etc.

Going by the latest rumors, Apple is set to unveil the new product at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco on the 27th, this month.

Skeleton Computer Case from Antec

By Koushik Saha on 27.12.09

comments (3)

For quite a lot of users out there, the way in which their computer looks is almost equally important as the way in which it operates. And for this reason, the Antec company has launched the Skeleton case, which has an extremely unusual design, allowing users to check out what's going on within their computers at all times.

And no, we're not talking about Plexiglas sides (which are fairly common), but about a total lack of “walls”, so to say. The case is completely see through, and is manufactured from a 0.8mm cold rolled steel for durability with reinforced plastic frame. Furthermore, it features rack mount-quality side rails for greater durability, while the layered tray design allows for greater system integration flexibility.

And since we're on the subject of system integration, it's worth mentioning that the Skeleton case features 4 drivebays, namely 2 x 5.25-inch external ones and 2 x 3.5-inch internal ones. However, should these 4 bays prove to be insufficient, users can always go for the additional (available optionally) 4 x 3.5-inch side panel mounted drive trays. Moreover, the device offers enough room even for those behemoths of a graphics card available on the market nowadays, some of which exceed 11 inches.

The cooling system is generally one of the most important selling points of any such device, but the Skeleton goes one step further than most cases. Thus, the Antec Skeleton features an unique design that allows for unprecedented airflow, a front 92mm fan, and a top three speed 250mm fan with multicolor LED customization.

The case is compatible with standard ATX motherboards and also incorporates several useful connectors, namely USB 2.0, FireWire, eSATA and audio (AC97 and HDA compatible) In and Out.

Even if the Skeleton case is quite an attractive product, it also has one downside, namely its size. As you can imagine, this thing is not exactly small, measuring 31.75 cm x 37.6 cm x 41.9 cm cm, at a weight of around 7.02 kg. However, the cool factor is quite high in this case, especially for those users who can't help but flaunt their computers.

Wacom Intuos 4

For those working as a professional graphic artist, retoucher or who have used a tablet in any kind in their professional, Wacom would not be a name that you will be unfamiliar with. Its previous flagship product, the Intuos 3, is practically an industry standard with almost all artists swearing by it. With such large shoes to fill, its certainly interesting to see how the latest addition to the manufacturer's Intuos line measures up.
Once you take the Intuos out of the box, the first thing you would notice is how sleek the Intuos 4 is.

Gone is the thick heavy piece of plastic that sits atop of Intuos 3 whose sole function is to trap heat and to stick to your arms. Well, Wacom has made the right decision of listening to their users and gave the surfacea smooth matte finish which made it an absolute pleasure to glide your hand over. However there are still remnants of the high gloss fetish; the strip covering the touch pad is covered in a high gloss plastic which perfectly captures every fingerprint and smudge. It might be great if you are trying to figure out who have been using your tablet while you are away, but probably not useful for anything else.

The new Intous 4 is also much thinner than Intuos 3 with only 1.2cm depth and coupled with its illuminated Express Keys nicely nestled amid its black base, which allows it to seat pretty on your desk. Unfortunately, there isn't much of a colour choice; you can have any colour you want as long as its black, which will probably leave Mac users spluttering for the invasion of their pure white setups. On the other hand, its still much prettier than the previous utilitarian grey setup.

WD came with 2TB Capacity AV-GP Hard Drives

As demand for higher capacity storage continues to increase due to large video applications, including HD video, Western Digital has expanded its WD AV-GP line of hard drives to include a 2 TB capacity, the industry’s largest available drive to-date. According to WD, the AV-GP hard drives with WD GreenPower Technology provide cooler and quieter operation and lower power consumption, as much as 40 percent over standard drives in their respective classes.
"Our consumer electronics customers require hard drives that consume less power, generate less heat and operate quietly," said Sharad Srivastava, Director-Sales (India & South Asia), Western Digital. "Audio and video recording applications, such as DVRs, media servers, media centers and mainstream surveillance systems, often demand 24x7 operations from hard drives. Our drives meet the demanding requirements of these markets including higher reliability, universal compatibility, low power consumption and theability to simultaneously record multiple audio and/or high-definition video streams."

Following are several features of the WD AV-GP line of hard drives:

* The drives have been designed to last in high-temperatures for when they are required to be con for long periods.
* Noise levels have been minimized to less than one sone - virtually below the threshold of human hearing.
* The IntelliPark feature is designed to deliver lower power consumption by automatically unloading the heads during idle to reduce aerodynamic drag. IntelliPark improves non-operating shock characteristics, providing enhanced robustness in environments where excessive transportation and handling occurs.
* They’ve been tested for compatibility with a broad range of AV products including set-top boxes, DVD recorders and mainstream surveillance systems.
* SilkStream is a feature designed to optimize smooth, continuous digital video playback of up to 12 simultaneous HD streams. It’s compatible with the ATA streaming command set so CE customers can use standard streaming management and error recovery options.
* The drive arm frequently sweeps across the disk to reduce uneven wear on the drive surface common to audio video streaming applications.

The WD AV-GP 2 TB hard drive (model WD20EVDS) is available with select distributors. Maximum suggested retail price (MSRP) is Rs. 15,500.

PC speed-freaks from across Europe will be pushing their processors to the limit in a series of extreme overclocking trials over the next month. The trials, which have been organised by AMD (NYSE:AMD), will see forum users from 19 leading technology forums from across the continent compete in a series of pedal-to-the-metal contests where they will attempt to push AMD platform technology, codenamed "Dragon," to the fastest speed possible. During the trials, the contestants will try to clock up the highest scores in categories such as 3D Mark performance, calculation speed and highest CPU clock speed.(i)

The first of these events was held in London on Thursday 23rd April 2009, where sparks flew, literally! In this special event, eight teams of daredevil journalists went head to head in an attempt to break through the sonic wall in 3D Mark05 and CPU clock speeds. Things got so fast and so furious that sparks actually flew from one of the team's "Dragon" rigs!(i)

It was a closely fought battle, but two winners emerged victorious. Clive Webster from Custom PC won the 3D Mark05 competition with a score of 24,689, while Tim Smally & Rich Swinburne from Bit-Tech won the CPU clock frequency competition with a speed of 4,211MHz.
