Boost Your iMac's Speaker Volume Level
By Koushik Saha on 20.10.08
Filed Under: Apple, Apple ipod, imac, macbook, sound system
While Apple's older iMacs (Late-2006) boast an impressive pair of stereo speakers (considering the all-in-one design and their small size), the same thing cannot be said about the company's 20-inch and 24-inch aluminum iMac (Mid-2007).However, both Apple's Late-2006 and Mid-2007 computers have their speakers placed at the bottom of the system, facing down. This leads to a considerable loss in sound quality, as the sound hits your desk and bounces off in all directions. Given this, some high pitched sounds (but not only) barely make it to your ears. There is a way to capture all the sound coming from your Mac's speakers, and direct it all towards your ears.
Buy a pair of headphones! Just kidding. No headphones. You do, however, need two extra items on your desk to make this happen. A couple of ashtrays, for instance. Just place them underneath each of your iMac's speakers. What happens is this:Channeling the sound (click to enlarge)
The sound waves hit the two hollow-shaped objects, becoming trapped inside the round walls for a short period of time. In a fraction of a second, the now-channeled sound bounces back out, upwards, since there's no other place to go. Simple, isn't it?
Go ahead, give it a tray… er, try! You don't necessarily have to use ashtrays. For once, they're not that aesthetic; second, we don't encourage smoking, and third, you can use some nicely designed pottery or something like that. You'll have to see what suits your room best, so the objects don't attract too much attention. After all, you don't want folks thinking that your all-in one computer actually needs additional hardware to work well, now, do you?
Notes
· You will see (hear) a significant difference in sound quality only when the volume level is above medium. The effect still applies even on a low volume level, only it's not so observable;
· For this to work, the sound first has to hit one of the inner-sides of the object, not the bottom directly. Check out more pictures below, to see exactly how you want to place your objects of choice.
Good luck and let us know how this trick worked for you.

Sony, the company that brought you the egg-shaped music player and the dog-like robot, has now created the transparent tube speaker.Called Sountina - a combination of ''sound'' and ''fountain'' - the $9,600 acrylic speaker goes on sale June 20 in Japan with sales elsewhere still undecided.Sony Corp. said the 3.3-foot speaker spreads high-quality, natural-sounding audio 360 degrees around itself by vibrating and can fill hotel lobbies, wedding halls and other large spaces.
Sony officials said the speaker's exact coverage depends on an area's interior surfaces.
The tube, slightly thicker than a baseball bat, was shown to reporters at Sony's Tokyo headquarters Wednesday.
LEDs, or light-emitting diodes, in blue, amber, pink and purple at the bottom of the tube are reflected inthe stainless steel at the top of the tube. In a darkened room, they reflect off a steel string dangling inside the tube.
Sony Senior Manager Noriyasu Kawaguchi acknowledged some people may prefer more blast and heavier bass.
''Maybe it doesn't work in the way some American consumers are expecting their speakers to work,'' he said.
The Sountina is for sophisticated consumers, including businesses seeking a speaker that blends into an interior, Kawaguchi said.
Sony has produced many products that show off technology but aren't expected to sell in numbers, such as the Rolly MP3 player, which went on sale in Japan last year and is promised to arrive in the U.S. this year. Another attention-getter, the Aibo dog robot, was discontinued in 2006.

Bose launches Computer MusicMonitor

Bose has introduced Computer MusicMonitor, debuting proprietary technology to offer a new level of audio quality from two very small, powered speakers. The Computer MusicMonitor has been developed for listening with laptop and desktop computers. Bose says that these speakers incorporate a technology that enables them to deliver deep low notes from very small enclosures: the dual internal opposing passive radiators. With this technology, Bose engineers have used two small passive radiators per speaker rather than one larger one. By placing the passive radiators in an opposing fashion, the primary mechanical vibrations created byone are canceled by the other. This preserves the desired audio quality and keeps the small enclosures from moving across a desk when played. The passive radiators are configured inside the enclosure, and the sound is symmetrically distributed through a small slot that runs side-to-side through the enclosure. Previously, passive radiators needed to face outward, requiring visible grilles on the enclosure.
Computer MusicMonitor features an aluminum enclosure. Bose says that it dissipates heat effectively, withstands the high pressure created within the small acoustic package, and provides a clean and modern look.
Its setup is simple. All required cables are included; with today's computers, no additional software or soundcard is needed to play downloaded music, Internet radio, and other content. There are two ways to operate the on/off and volume: via the system's remote control or by using the buttons discreetly positioned on the side of the right speaker.
The Bose MusicMonitor will be available this month for an announced minimum reselling price of Rs. 21263. It will be available at Bose retail stores, Boseindia.com, and the company's toll free number.
