A small group of Maximum PC readers (and editors) tend to glaze over at the mere mention of the Eee PC. For those of you that fall into this category, I’ll do my best to keep it interesting and you’ll be glad to know, this isn’t an ordinary netbook announcement. The now household name that spawned a generation of inexpensive PC’s have unveiled a new form factor that brings the Eee product line closer to being a desktop solution than ever before. First impressions of the product are obvious, it is clearly intended to appeal to the budget conscious crowd who can’t afford an iMac, or simply don’t care to pay the Apple tax. Asus isn’t the first to take on the iMac, but the Eee brand name, and touch screen interface gives it an interesting advantage over its competitors. The Eee Top will come in two variations, the ET1602 and the ET1603. Both models feature a 15.6” touch screen display, a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, 1GB of Ram, and a 160GB Hard Drive. Other less critical features include 802.11n networking as well as a built in card reader and web cam. The two models are almost completely identical with the one exception being the ET1603’s inclusion of the ATI Mobility Radeon HD3450 for graphics. The ET1602 by comparison will only sport Intel integrated. No pricing has yet been announced for either model, and both systems will feature Windows XP Home with a custom touch screen GUI.

So, is this the form factor of Eee PC you were waiting for?

China under serious problem with Microsoft's anti-piracy tool

Windows users in China may face serious problems with Microsoft's launch of an anti-piracy tool that turns the user's desktop black if the installed software is not legal.
The Windows Genuine Advantage program turns the user's desktop black if the installed software fails a validation test. This is Microsoft's latest weapon in its war on piracy in China, where the vast majority of 200 million computer users are believed to be using fake software.
The company announced a week earlier that the anti-piracy software would be automatically installed on users' computers through a typical Internet-based updated mechanism. If a computer fails a validation test, the desktop changes to a plain black background when the computer is restarted.
Chinese Internet users have expressed fury at Microsoft's launch the anti-piracy tool.
Dong Zhengwei, 35, a Beijing lawyer, described Microsoft as the "biggest hacker in China with its intrusion into users' computer systems without their agreement or any judicial authority," as he was quoted by the China Daily newspaper.

"Microsoft's measure will cause serious functional damage to users' computers and, according to China's Criminal Law, the company can stand accused of breaching and hacking into computer systems," he was quoted as saying.

Dong also filed a complaint with the Chinese Ministry of Public Security on Sunday, accrding to the paper.
Although a few instances of screen blackout were reported on the first day of the action, Internet experts and industry insiders have expressed grave concern at the move. The China Software Industry Association (CSIA), the only software industrial organization in the country, is also planning to take action against Microsoft.

Microsoft defends the program on its website as "part of Microsoft's commitment to help protect its intellectual property and to help you avoid problems before they happen."

Microsoft on Thusday announced Global Anti-Piracy Day, a simultaneous launch of education initiatives and enforcement actions in 49 countries on six continents to combat the illegal trade of pirated and counterfeit software. The programs include intellectual property awareness campaigns, engagements with partner businesses, educational forums, local law enforcement training, and new legal actions against alleged software counterfeiters and pirates.

With the world is going eco-friendly (and smaller!), why should Dell be left behind?

Back in April 2008, there were rumours about the launch of Dell's smallest, greenest PC. That was then. Yesterday, Dell finally revealed the little green machine for all to see. The Studio Hybrid, as Dell chose to call it, is claimed to be 80% smaller than a mini tower and consumes 70% less energy. It also comes in an eco-friendly packaging with a system recycling kit bundled along. The machine looks similar to a large capacity external hard drive and as Dell says,it is "about the size of a collegiate dictionary". The Studio Hybrid can be set up in either a vertical or a horizontal orientation, and be personalized with a choice of seven optional and interchangeable sleeves: Bamboo, Emerald, Quartz, Ruby, Sapphire, Slate and Topaz.

With a starting price of $499, the Studio Hybrid is powerful enough for basic web page designing, editing and uploading videos and digital photo albums. It comes with an HDMI port as standard and can be customized with an optional wireless keyboard, Wi-Fi networking, a Blu-Ray Disc drive for watching high-definition DVDs, and a TV tuner.

This makes it a pretty capable PC and it should be an attractive proposition for buyers who were looking for an energy efficient, powerful computing device, in a space-saving package.

"Our goal was to design a desktop that fits in the office or in the living room, or anywhere space is at a premium," said Michael Scheschuk, desktop product marketing. "We've created a desktop PC category that combines style, performance and a high degree of energy efficiency."

Along with the Studio Hybrid, Dell also introduced two new Inspiron PCs, including the Inspiron 13 -- a sub-$800 13-inch laptop.

The 24-inch monitor also continues the orange and black theme of the Predator rig and supports HD content, with a native resolution of 1920x1200. Bringing the rest of the specs home, we see an excellent 2ms refresh rate (probably gray-to-gray), and a 400nit brightness. The monitor also features some marketing mumbo-jumbo (the Acer CrystalBrite technology, if you must know) that promises to reduce ambient light reflections for a much cleaner and sharper on-screen image.

Soon after we began posting images and information regarding the original Asus Eee PC from the Computex show in Taipei in June of last year, we knew Asus had a hot product on their hands. In fact, our initial hands-on preview of the Eee PC was so popular, it has actually been one of the most heavily trafficked articles we've ever posted here on HotHardware. The combination of the Eee PC's ultra small form factor, features, and affordable price made it attractive to such a broad range of technology consumers, that readers from around the globe poured in to check out Asus' slick, Linux-based, mini-machine.

A few months later, we followed up with our . By the time early Eee PCs were ready for the retail market, Asus had morphed the machine from a competitor of the OLPC XO to a UMPC for the masses. In the move, pricing increased from initial reports, but that didn't stop the Eee PC from being wildly popular. The Eee PC was still priced low enough to allow budget conscious consumers to own a UMPC, and to allow power users to pick one up as somewhat of an accessory for theirmain PC or full-sized notebooks. Fan sites and numerous Eee PC mods would eventually hit the web too; Asus really did strike a chord and consumers (and competitors) listened.

Due to the success of the originals, Asus of course followed up with numerous accessories and multi-colored Eee PCs in the months after the initial release. The follow-up units were essentially identical to the originals though, save for the different colored enclosures. The first really major change to the Eee PC line-up would be the Eee PC 900, which was just introduced about two weeks ago.
