Panasonic launched 20 hrs.battery life laptop
Engineers at Panasonic have succeeded in reducing the size of a prototype methanol fuel cell so that it's no larger than a laptop battery pack but provides all-day power. The fuel cell, which the Japanese company has been developing for the last eight years, was first shown at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January 2006. At that time it was about double the size of a laptop battery, but the latest version, due to be unveiled later this week at an event in Japan, is half the size, Panasonic said Monday.
The new version has a volume of 270 cubic centimeters and can deliver an average power of 10 watts with a peak output of 20 watts, Panasonic said. It weighs 320 grams.
On a 200cc charge of methanol it should be able to deliver power for 20 hours -- considerably longer than the Lithium Ion batteries used in laptop PCs today -- and when the methanol gets low all that's required is a quick refill and it's back to full capacity. This fast recharge is seen as one of the key advantages of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). They are also viewed as more environmentally friendly than Lithium Ion batteries because the only by-product is a little water and carbon dioxide.
Additionally Panasonic has also developed a stand-alone DMFC charger that has a couple of USB power outlets and can be used to recharge dead gadgets such as iPods and cell phones when away from a power socket. The recharger is slightly larger at 360cc and weighs 350 grams. Both will get their first public showing at the Hydrogen Energy Advanced Technology Exhibition 2008 that is due to open Wednesday in the western Japanese city of Fukuoka.
Neither is likely to go on sale soon. Panasonic doesn't have any firm plans for commercialization but said it hopes to have them on the market by the end of 2012.
A handful of big-name consumer electronics companies have been developing DMFCs for the last several years, but are yet to bring the products to market. For the last few years most companies have vaguely stated "next year" as a commercialization date but it's an answer that's given no matter when asked.
That might be about to change. Toshiba recently made the clearest promise yet to DMFC commercialization: sometime during its current financial year, which ends in March 2009. At the recent Ceatec show in Japan the company demonstrated a working cell phone that included a DMFC, but Toshiba isn't letting on yet if this will be its first product.

Panasonic has introduced two new Blu-ray players – the DMP-BD35 and DMP-BD55.The players claim to feature technology that reproduces movies with colors 'faithful' to the original. The PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus video processor, (included in the player's circuitry) was developed after more than 15 years of collaboration between Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory and professional cinema studios in Hollywood. Both models feature an HD Audio Decoder (Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus and DTSTM-HD Master Audio Essential), which support the 7.1-channel surround sound newly adopted in Blu-ray Discs.
The Panasonic BD55 has a 192kHz, 24bit, audio digital-analog converter plus high quality components, as quoted in their release. The DMP-BD55 can also output analog signals for 7.1-channel sound.
Another cool USP is the slim design, which is due to something called the UniPhier chip. UniPhier is a Panasonic-created system LSI developed by applying 45-nanometer processing to a consumer product – a world’s first. This single-chip integration technology also contributes greatly to the BD35’s slim height of 49mm.
Both the BD35 and BD55 feature BD-Live compatibility which enables users to connect to the Internet to download images, subtitles and other data, and take part in interactive activities and multi-player games linked to bonus cinema content found on Blu-ray Discs.
There's no information on the pricing yet.

Powered by Intel's new Atom processor, the CF-U1 integrates the robust features of a full-size Toughbook in an ultra-mobile form
factor. About 7-inches wide, 6-inches deep, and 2-inches high, the UMPC is fitted with a 5.6-inches touch-screen viewable even in sunlight, QWERTY keyboard, 16GB solid state removable drive, 1GB memory, 2 mega pixels camera, and fingerprint scanner (optional). The Toughbook CF-U1 also comes with WiFi, Bluetooth, and 3G-mobile-Broadband internet connectivity."Panasonic has built the new Toughbook CF-U1 but our customers have designed it," said Kyp Walls, director (Product Management) at Panasonic Computer Solutions. "The form and functionality is a direct result of more than two years of feedback solicited from an array of government and commercial organizations seeking to address the needs of abroad range of mobile users," Walls said.
According to Panasonic, the rugged UMPC is built to thrive in environments as diverse as construction sites, mining operations, oil and gas refineries, manufacturing facilities, railroad yards, city streets, and storage warehouses.
The CF-U1, unlike other handhelds, operates on full-function Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems. It has a fan-less, all-weather design that results in reduced noise and weight, and eliminates points of failure, says Panasonic. The CF-U1 is claimed to offer around 9 hours battery life and comes with several docking options.
The new UMPC from Panasonic will be available worldwide in August this year for an estimated $2,499 from authorized Panasonic resellers and distributors.

One of the key elements that can "make or break" a presentation are the tools used for delivering the information, which, in most cases, are represented by projectors. And since we're living in an ultra-mobile, wireless world, the people over at Panasonic have decided to launch a couple of projectors (the LB80 series) that will make life a lot easier for their users, since they can be carried around quite easily and accessed wirelessly from up to 128 computers. The highly portable LB80 series projectors, which include the PT-LB80NTU, PT-LB80U, PT-LB75NTU, PT-LB75U projectors and their widescreen counterpart, the PT-LW80NTU, feature a special, compact and dust-resistant design to reduce maintenance costs and increase mobility. The PT-LB80NTU, PT-LB75NTU and PT-LW80NTU also feature built-in wireless capability, which means that users connected to a wireless network will be able to access these devices in a very fast and easy manner.
The quality of the displayed images is, as expected, the main selling point these devices have to over, and it's quite interesting to note that Panasonic's new projectors fare pretty well in this particular area. Thus, while the PT-LB80NTU and PT-LB75NTU projectors generate images at 1,024 x 768 resolution and a 4:3 aspect ratio, thenew PT-LW80NTU comes equipped with wide-aspect (16:10 aspect ratio) LCD panels for reproduction of WXGA (1,280 x 800) images from a computer, which makes it a very good solution for those users who need a projector that can display wide-screen images from a DVD video source or wide-aspect computers.
Furthermore, the PT-LB80NTU and PT-LB80U generate 3,200 lumens of brightness each, while the PT-LB75NTU, the PT-LB75U and the PT-LW80NTU models provide 2,600 lumens. All of the new projectors pack other attractive features as well, as for example quiet operation, 3-second speed start, direct power off, built-in closed-caption decoder, an array of in/out A/V connection terminals, anti-theft features, an easy-to-use remote control and much more.
"We understand that to create a next-generation portable projector, the design has to be compact, full-featured and cost-effective", said Thomas Zitelli, president of Panasonic Projector Systems Company, when talking about the company's latest announcement. "With the Panasonic LB80 series, mobile presenters benefit from advanced PC and Mac-compatible technologies coupled with a mobile, cost-saving design that delivers nothing but remarkable picture quality."
And Mr. Zitelli is actually rather right, since these projectors are available in a pretty "friendly" price range, from around 3,500 US dollars (the PT-LW80NTU) down to around $2,000 (the PT-LB75U), which will probably make them quite attractive for an enhanced category of consumers.

Panasonic has announced their development of the world's thinnest internal Blu-ray drive. At just 9.5 mm tall, it's thin enough for laptops but still packs a performance punch. We're talking 2X recording for both BD-R and BD-RE (rewritable) discs, along with BD-R DL support (but we're guessing that the dual layer writing is just 1X...have fun burning those 50GB discs). The drive also supports DVDs with 8x burning on all types of discs. It's priceless for now with Panasonic only shipping units to manufacturers at the moment, but we'll get more details soon when it's on display at CES. And here is the rest of it.
