Few reasons to opt for tablet than netbook
2011 has been dubbed "The Year of the Tablet", and rightly so because so many of these ultra-compact computing devices have been launched this year. A tablet PC was considered unviable as a computing device a few years ago, but tablets today pack in a lot of firepower to be able to handle almost any normal computing task. Here is a list of the reasons why tablets can potentially replace netbooks in the near future.
1) Ultra-portability
While netbooks have been termed ultra-portable, tablets are even more so, thanks to their structure as a single slate, rather than a hinged design like a netbook. Tablets are usually much lighter than netbooks, and their size lets you take them anywhere. Even their chargers are more portable, making it easier to carry the whole thing anywhere.2) Price
Tablets have come a long way from being too expensive to dirt-cheap, with high end exceptions such as the iPad 2 and the Galaxy Tab. Low end tablets start at around Rs 7000, and pack in a decent performance for daily computing tasks. Netbooks, on the other hand, rarely breach the Rs 12,000 mark, and most are priced above Rs 15,000.
3) Versatility
Most tablets come with Google Android operating system, which gives them access to a huge repository of apps from the Android Market, many of them being free. These apps allow the tablet to do just about anything, thanks to the creativity of the app developers. The above also applies for other tablet OSes such as iOS and BlackBerry OS. This versatility is not so easy to achieve for a netbook.
4) Battery Life
The battery life of a tablet is simply incomparableto that of the netbook. A tablet can easily last for more than half a day on a single charge, while a netbook struggles to make it past four or five hours of normal usage. The better battery life lets you take it anywhere without having to worry much about losing charge in the middle of your work.
5) Internet Connectivity Options
While Wi-Fi is the standard connectivity options on all tablets, they often come with 3G connectivity options using a mobile SIM card. Wi-Fi hotspots are hard to find in India, making 3G connectivity more feasible to stay connected no matter where you take the device. This is a major advantage of tablets over netbooks, which come with only Wi-Fi option.
6) User Interface
Being touch-screen devices, the user interface of tablets is usually refined, intuitive, and user friendly. Not only is the operating system designed to allow for efficient interaction with the user, but also the applications sport a user friendly interface. For those who miss a QWERTY keyboard of the netbook, there are inexpensive keyboards available, which can work with any tablet.
7) Virus-free
Ever heard of viruses attacking tablets? Tablets have so far remain insulated from such attacks. Although it cannot be said that it will remain so forever, it is considerably safe as of now to work on a tablet than on a netbook with Windows, which has always been a prime target of viruses.
That is not all. While this may not really be related to computing, the GPS unit built in many tablets helps use it as an inexpensive navigational tool when it is not being used as a tablet. Netbooks may have been in vogue a couple of years ago, but tablets seem to be set to rule the future.

Intel rises hope for its Moorestwon MID Platform
ince Intel launched the Atom platform the netbook market has significantly increased, providing users and PC vendors alike with a new computer category, specifically focused on delivering a rich Internet experience and on-the-go computing. However, the success level of the Atom processor might soon be overtaken by one of Intel's upcoming products, which is targeted at the growing market for Mobile Internet Devices. This will be an area where Intel's Moorestown chip will have to compete with some other chip makers, like ARM or VIA. However, the Santa Clara, California-based global leading chip maker is confident that its chip will succeed in surpassing those of its competitors. In a recent news-article on the Inquirer, Pankaj Kedia, Intel's Director of the MID program, sat down and detailed his view on the company's MID platform. “Moorestown will give you the opportunity not only to experience the Internet in its full glory but will also have voice capability” said Kedia. He also added “I call it the ‘Next Smartphone’, the smart smartphone.”
The chip, according to Kedia, will be capable of providing the end-user with support for the Internet, gaming, personal navigation, multimedia and all of the features that you require from your everyday smartphone.
The Moorestown platform is slated for release next year, the first device being the fruit of the collaboration between the chip giant and LG Electronics. The two companies are currently collaboratingon the upcoming Moorestown-based LG MID running Moblin 2.0. Unfortunately, the exact details of when the MID will become available have not yet been disclosed.
In regard to the competition between Intel and ARM, Kedia said that, because Intel's platform would be based on x86 architecture, users would be able to fully benefit from the Internet experience, while the ARM architecture “is not compatible at the architectural level and is not compatible at the implementation level” said Kedia.
It is clear that Intel is planning its products to be in almost everything you own, which consequently means that other chip makers might have a tough time ahead of themselves, trying to compete with the Chipzilla.

After having officially launched its new Core i7-based Studio XPS 435 desktop behemoth, Round Rock, Texas-based Dell has finally decided to allow its customers to purchase the new 10-inch Inspiron Mini netbook. The new Inspiron Mini 10 has just gone on sale in the U.S. with a starting price tag of just $399. Unfortunately, users will still have to wait for their purchased systems to arrive, as the preliminary ship date is April the 2nd.The latest Inspiron Mini 10 netbook comes as Dell's response to the high number of 10-inch netbooks that have recently been launched on the market. It still boasts Intel's Atom platform, but provides users with some slightly different configuration options, including a new processor. In fact, the Inspiron Mini 10 is among those few netbook systems that allow users to choose from either a 1.33GHz Atom X520 CPU, running at 1.33GHz, or a 1.6GHz Atom X530. The difference between the two options will up the price tag by $50,over the basis of $399.
Other system specifications are pretty much what you would expect from a netbook, that is, 1GB of RAM and a 160GB, 5400rpm SATA hard drive. Aside from these options, users will be left with choosing the netbook's coloring theme. The basic Inspiron Mini 10 model comes with a black color option, but for an extra of $30 users will be granted the opportunity to choose between “alpine white,” “new cherry red,” “ice blue,” “jade green,” or “promise pink.” If you decide to go for the last one, Dell promises to donate $5 to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure charity.
Additional features include a built-in WiFi g connectivity option, integrated webcam and a 3-cell battery, which doesn't sound very promising if you are looking for a longer battery life.

Asus Eee PC T91-easy look
The Eee PC T91 tablet PC is the first major departure from the traditional and comprehensive range of Asus Eee PC netbooks. The first rumours of such a defice surfaced in October last year, three months before the company officially unveiled it during its CES keynote. It's still a couple of months away from release though with the expected UK availability date penned for late April. This is a little later than earlier reports, which suggested a March release date timeframe. We managed to grab some hands-on time with a pre-production Eee PC T91 sample last week and while there are a few things still subject to change, the device is mostly ready.
The first and most important feature on this Eee PC is its touch-sensitive display (with the typical 1,024 x 600 native resolution) which is attached to the rest of the machine via a 180-degree hinge. This hingealso rotates by 180 degrees and enables the T91 to transform itself from a traditional netbook into what Asus claims is the smallest and slimmest tablet PC to date when the display is folded back over the keyboard. With an 8.9-inch screen diagonal like the Eee PC 900 and 901, it's smaller than a lot of the netbooks on the market today. The rest of its measurements are 225 x 164 x 25.2-28.4mm (W x D x H), which means it’s smaller than the Eee PC 900/901 and like those models, it too weighs less than 1kg with the battery attached.
These measurements may be a concern for some – especially those with bigger hands – as typing can be quite cramped on the keyboard if you’re using it for long periods of time. The good news is that there's a larger 10-inch version – the T101 – on the way as well for those who feel that the T91's slender measurements are a little too lean.
Even before opening the lid, it's clear that the T91's design is quite different to anything we've seen before in the Eee PC line up. The white finish will be familiar, as it's been around since the Eee PC 701 took the market by storm 18 months ago now; however, unlike the original Eee PC 701, the T91 has a glossy finish. This unfortunately attracts finger prints pretty easily – the worst culprit for this is the black bezel around the display. The glossy touch-sensitive display will also attract finger prints as well, but that’s a given for any device with a touch screen – the way to minimize finger prints is to use the included stylus, although the touch screen does work reasonably well with just your finger.
While we’ve only seen the white version of the T91, Asus tells us that there are other colour options available. These are Black, Pink, Champagne and Navy – the black will likely attract finger prints in exactly the same way as the bezel, but since we’ve not had time to look at the others, we can’t pass judgement on how receptive they are to finger printing.

After 8.9-Inch Aspire One, Acer focuses on 10-Inch netbooks
According to the latest news in the industry, Acer could be considering phasing out its highly-successful 8.9-inch Aspire One netbook, as the company plans to focus on the upcoming 10-inch model. The 8.9-inch Aspire One could be phased out sometime in the second quarter of 2009, according to sources in the industry, cited by Digitimes.Acer's Aspire One, which is manufactured by Quanta Computer, has been one of the most successful products last year, having enabled Acer to seriously compete with ASUS and its Eee PC range of netbooks. The 8.9-inch netbook is built on the same platform as most netbooks on the market, providing users with the computing power of an Intel Atom processor, a maximum of 1GB of RAM and a Windows XP or Linux OS. The system could come to its end of life as early as Q2 2009, as the world's third largest vendor of computer systems is expected to focus on a new 10-inch netbook.
It is yet uncertain how many 10-inch models Acer will be releasing, but the company is expected to debut a new netbook sometime in February. The respective ultraportable system hasalready been leaked on the Internet, providing users with a full range of photos and technical specifications. The 10-inch Aspire One will come with 2GB of memory and an estimated price tag of US$399. However, according to Digitimes, Acer could be further expanding the Aspire One lineup with the addition of two “enterprise models,” which will be outsourced to Quanta Computer. These two netbooks will be offered in an 8.9-inch and a 10-inch form factor.
Currently, there are no specific details regarding the specifications and pricing of said netbook but, as with other upcoming products, such details could emerge sooner than later.

Dell introduced Adamo, competitor of MacBook
After much anticipation and a series of articles surfacing on the web, prior to the debut of this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, Dell has finally introduced its latest portable computer system, the Dell Adamo. Claimed to be the company’s response to Apple’s thin MacBook Air, or to the Envy notebook from HP’s Voodoo PC, the Adamo appears like yet another sleek-looking 13-inch notebook waiting to be embraced by all those tech fashionistas out there. There aren’t any specific technical details, but the laptop is expected to become available later this year.A number of blog sites have managed to grab several pictures of Dell’s new pride and joy, which can also be seen in the gallery below. As you’ll be able to appreciate for yourself from these images, the Adamo appears to have combined just the right design elements, allowing it to appeal to those consumers out there that are looking for a PC response to Apple’s MacBook Air.
Despite no specific details on the part of the Round Rock, Texas-based PC vendor, the Adamo is expected to come out with a rather expensive price tag, specifically due to its unique design. Additionally, Dell has said that in the development of the new Adamo it has made useof high quality materials, yet another reason for which the upcoming thin laptop is probably aimed at those with more “generous” pockets.
Dell’s Adamo is undoubtedly thinner than most notebooks on the market, but given these early pictures, it doesn’t appear to be a real competitor for the MacBook Air. However, Adamo’s design features could also set the system as a real challenger for Apple’s MacBook Pro.
The device has been showcased at CES, which is where Dell has also introduced a couple of other new products, including the new Mini 10, another of the company’s portable computer systems ready to take advantage of Intel’s successful Atom platform. The fellows over at engadget were lucky enough to get a hands-on experience with the new Dell laptop, also providing a photo gallery and a video.

In many ways, the Acer Aspire One is like the little sibling of MSI’s Wind. Besides sporting the same Intel Atom N270 processor running at 1.6GHz, 1GB of RAM, and Intel GMA 950 integrated graphics, the two netbooks share a similar look and feel. The difference is that the Acer has a slightly smaller form factor and an 8.9-inch screen, while the Wind’s screen is 10.1 inches. In our benchmarks, the similarities continued: The Aspire One performed nearly identically to the Wind in almost all of our tests, chugging through the Photoshop script in just 729 seconds, a second faster than the Wind. It also lasted a few minutes longer in the battery drain test—not surprising, given its smaller screen.
The One’s keyboard is the same size as the Wind’s, but thankfully it doesn’t employ the latter’s irritating reversal of the Ctrl and Function keys.
The touchpad feels like it’s covered with the same paint as the rest of the machine, which meant we couldn’t tell just by touch whether our fingers were on it. Acer also decided to put the mouse buttonson either side of the touchpad instead of below it, which makes pointing and clicking awkward.
One big advantage the Aspire One has over the Wind is its 120GB hard drive, which is 50 percent larger than the MSI machine’s drive. Also, the screen is glossy, while the Wind’s is matte. The choice between reflective and matte is largely a personal one, but we prefer the lesser of the two glares.
In a fair fight against the Asus Eee PC 901, the One clearly emerges as the victor. And, though it has flaws that the MSI Wind doesn’t share, the One has a significant advantage over even that model: It’s $150 cheaper, despite its much larger hard drive. In our opinion, that $150 buys it a bit of slack.

Western Digital Scorpio Black
By Koushik Saha on 3.1.09
Filed Under: chipset, hard drive, laptop, netbook, non-ssd, western digital
Sales of netbooks, laptops and desktop replacements has been rising these last several years, in 2008 we even saw the scale tip over in favor of these portable computers. Most of these devices share the same processor, video card and chipset technology as their desktop counterparts, delivering performance almost on par. The overall speed of a PC is determined by its slowest component, inside laptops this has been the hard drive, due to space constraints manufacturers have to use 2.5” (and even 1.8”) sized drives, which reduces the storage space as well as speed compared the desktop 3.5” disks. With the introduction of the Solid State Drives in 2008, we should be able to overcome this bottleneck in our portable PCs, unfortunately pricing is still quite high and disk size is limited to a fraction of what the good old hard drives are capable of.In this business world every penny saved is a penny won, so you won’t see any SSD in entry and mainstream laptops just yet, instead you do get larger drives which can store up 500Gb inside a 2.5” HDD housing, impressive to say the least.
We tested a business grade Dell Latitude D630 laptop with three different 2.5” hard drives to see how much it would benefit from a HDD upgrade. On the Dell site the default configuration costs $1243, it comes with an 80Gb 5400rpm 2.5” HDD. Dell gives you theoption to upgrade to a 7200rpm model for $40 which is definitely worth it. You can also go for an SSD, but the cheapest will set you back $450 and it’s only 34Gb… not really a good deal. They also have a “128Gb Mobility Solid State Drive“ listed for $460, which can be any MLC based SSD.
The 7200rpm 80Gb 2.5” disk we found inside our D630 was a Seagate Momentus 7200.2 80gb. Dell does change brand and model over the course of a year, so it’s a not 100% certain you’ll find this disk in every D630 ordered with a 80gb 7200rpm HDD. Specifications
The Seagate Momentus 7200.2 SATA/300 80 GB laptop hard drive enables the best combination of high performance, capacity and mobility in a 2.5-inch small form factor (SFF). The Seagate Momentus 7200-RPM-class hard drive is ideal for performance-class laptops, SFF PCs and many other small or mobile performance environments.

We wanted a lot more storage on this laptop than was offered by the 80Gb Seagate, Dell only offers upgrades up to 160Gb so we had to look elsewhere. In a local shop we picked up two 2.5” drives from Western Digital, one Scorpio 250Gb and one Scorpio Black 320Gb.
Specifications Scorpio Black
With 7200 RPM spin speed, 16 MB cache, and capacities up to 320 GB, these drives enable you to have the best of both worlds: the capacity and performance of a desktop PC with the convenience and portability of a notebook.
Specifications Scorpio
With 5400 RPM spin speed and 12 ms access time and up to 3 Gb/s SATA interface speed, even the most demanding customer will appreciate the performance achieved by WD Scorpio Blue drives.
The Scorpio Black is top of the line performance drive, 7200rpm and 16Mb cache, it matches and surpasses the specifications of many desktop hard drives. The Scorpio (none-black) spins at 5400rpm which is considerably slower so it’ll be interesting to see how it stacks up to the competition.
