Last week, Nokia unveiled to the world their first smartphones powered by Microsoft's Windows Phone operating system, namely the Nokia Lumia 800 and the Lumia 710, but it seems that these are not the only Mango handsets that the company has been already working on.

At the Design Museum in Shad, Thames, in the UK, the vendor put on display another Windows Phone device, one that was not seen before.

No specific details on what this device is all about have emerged until now, but some suggest that it could be one of the upcoming Windows Phone handsets that Nokia has in store for us.

“Nokia Products that changed the world' is an exhibition currently on at the Design Museum in Shad, Thames. Let us know what our favourite Nokia is in the Time Machine and be in with a chance to win prizes,” Nokia notes on its Facebook page, where the photo to the left can be seen.

Some suggest that this device would be the same Nokia 900 smartphone that was rumored only days before Nokia went official with its first two Windows Phones last week, and which was said to be on its way to the market as the Nokia Ace.

However, the specificationslist of the rumored Nokia 900 were strikingly resembling those of Nokia Lumia 800, and chances are that the rumor was actually about one and the same smartphone.

As for the handset that can be seen in the photo that Nokia put on its Facebook page, it does not seem to closely resemble the already made official handsets, nor the rumored Nokia 900, at least not when the outer design is involved.

Undoubtedly, Nokia will bring to the market some great new Windows Phones in the not-too-distant future, since the company already announced that it aims at launching many more new handsets powered by Microsoft's mobile OS, and chances are that slim, highly appealing phones as the one in the photo above will also be there.

Few reasons to opt for tablet than netbook

By Koushik Saha on 6.11.11

2011 has been dubbed "The Year of the Tablet", and rightly so because so many of these ultra-compact computing devices have been launched this year. A tablet PC was considered unviable as a computing device a few years ago, but tablets today pack in a lot of firepower to be able to handle almost any normal computing task. Here is a list of the reasons why tablets can potentially replace netbooks in the near future.

1) Ultra-portability
While netbooks have been termed ultra-portable, tablets are even more so, thanks to their structure as a single slate, rather than a hinged design like a netbook. Tablets are usually much lighter than netbooks, and their size lets you take them anywhere. Even their chargers are more portable, making it easier to carry the whole thing anywhere.

2) Price
Tablets have come a long way from being too expensive to dirt-cheap, with high end exceptions such as the iPad 2 and the Galaxy Tab. Low end tablets start at around Rs 7000, and pack in a decent performance for daily computing tasks. Netbooks, on the other hand, rarely breach the Rs 12,000 mark, and most are priced above Rs 15,000.

3) Versatility
Most tablets come with Google Android operating system, which gives them access to a huge repository of apps from the Android Market, many of them being free. These apps allow the tablet to do just about anything, thanks to the creativity of the app developers. The above also applies for other tablet OSes such as iOS and BlackBerry OS. This versatility is not so easy to achieve for a netbook.

4) Battery Life
The battery life of a tablet is simply incomparableto that of the netbook. A tablet can easily last for more than half a day on a single charge, while a netbook struggles to make it past four or five hours of normal usage. The better battery life lets you take it anywhere without having to worry much about losing charge in the middle of your work.

5) Internet Connectivity Options
While Wi-Fi is the standard connectivity options on all tablets, they often come with 3G connectivity options using a mobile SIM card. Wi-Fi hotspots are hard to find in India, making 3G connectivity more feasible to stay connected no matter where you take the device. This is a major advantage of tablets over netbooks, which come with only Wi-Fi option.

6) User Interface
Being touch-screen devices, the user interface of tablets is usually refined, intuitive, and user friendly. Not only is the operating system designed to allow for efficient interaction with the user, but also the applications sport a user friendly interface. For those who miss a QWERTY keyboard of the netbook, there are inexpensive keyboards available, which can work with any tablet.

7) Virus-free
Ever heard of viruses attacking tablets? Tablets have so far remain insulated from such attacks. Although it cannot be said that it will remain so forever, it is considerably safe as of now to work on a tablet than on a netbook with Windows, which has always been a prime target of viruses.

That is not all. While this may not really be related to computing, the GPS unit built in many tablets helps use it as an inexpensive navigational tool when it is not being used as a tablet. Netbooks may have been in vogue a couple of years ago, but tablets seem to be set to rule the future.

Samsung secures top position in Smart Phone market

Samsung and Apple aren't on good terms with each other as we all know. Both the companies are slamming lawsuits at each other left and right. Not much is spoken about the other aspect of the rivalry, the sales numbers. Apple has been leading the pack for quite a while now with its sales numbers surpassing Samsung's and Nokia's numbers fairly easily. Well, that is history now for Samsung has made its way to the top as the number one manufacturer in the world (in terms of sales) with 23.6 million shipments reported during Q3, with Apple coming in at second place with 17.3 million shipments. These numbers were calculated by IDC, which is a well known research firm. Therefore, Samsung now has 20% of the share of the global smartphone market while Apple is at 15%. Nokia's figures have dramatically dropped with the company losing half of its market share from the last quarter. The Finnish mobile manufacturer had 28% of the total smartphone market share during Q2 and now it has only 14%. RIM's market share also has taken a beating coming down to 10% from 15%. HTC, however, has crept up to the top five list with about 11% of the market share now. That's a growth of 4% from the last quarter. It is importantto bear in mind that shipments do not actually reflect into sales.

So what do these figures tell us? Well, Apple doesn't rule the smartphone segment anymore, though it is being said that the wait for the new iPhone might have been a contributing factor for the low sales. Q4's numbers will give us a better idea of where the companies stand, since by then, most brands will have a flagship of their own. Nokia will have the Lumia in the market, while the iPhone 4S is almost a month old and Samsung is looking at the launch of the Galaxy Nexus. We don't have the numbers on the profits that these companies made but we figure Apple would top that list since it only has a couple of smartphones in its inventory. Either way, Samsung is now sitting right on top and we expect the company to do well in the current quarter as well.

With 4Gb DDR3 Chips Samsung doubles memory capacity

By Koushik Saha on 29.1.09

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world leader in advanced memory technology, announced today that it has made a significant advancement in the push for higher volume memory chips by developing the world's first four gigabit (Gb) DDR3 DRAM chip, using 50 nanometer (nm) process technology.

With more and more data centers seeking a reduction in the number of servers they use, the development of low-power 4Gb DDR3 has become critical in reducing data center costs, improving server time management and increasing overall efficiency.

For the new generation of "green" servers, the 4Gb DDR3's high density combined with its lower level of power consumption will not only provide a reduction in electricity bills, but also a cutback in installment fees, maintenance fees and repair fees involving power suppliers and heat-emitting equipment.

"We have leveraged our strength in innovation to develop the first 4Gb DDR3, in leading the industry to higher DRAM densities," said Kevin Lee, vice president, technical marketing, Samsung Semiconductor, Inc. "By designing our 4Gb DDR3 using state-of-the-art 50-nm class technology, weour 4Gb DDR3 using state-of-the-art 50-nm class technology, we are setting the stage for what ultimately will result in significant cost-savings, for servers and for the overall computing market," he added.

The 4Gb DDR3 can be produced in 16 gigabyte (GB) registered dual in-line memory modules (RDIMM) for servers, as well as 8GB unbuffered DIMM (UDIMM) for workstations and desktop PCs, and 8GB small outline DIMM (SODIMM) for laptops. By applying dual-die package technology, this new device can deliver modules of up to 32GB - offering twice as much capacity as memory modules based on the previous highest chip density of 2Gb.

Designed to be low-powered, the 4Gb DDR3 DRAM operates at 1.35 volts (V), therein improving its throughput by 20 percent over a 1.5V DDR3. Its maximum speed is 1.6 gigabits per second (Gbps).

In 16GB module configurations, 4Gb DDR3 can consume 40 percent less power than 2Gb DDR3 because of its higher density and because it uses only half the DRAM (32 vs. 64 chips).

With an aggressive conversion to 50nm-class production for higher density DDR3, Samsung intends to remain the clear leader in high-volume/high-performance DRAM.

In September 2008, Samsung announced its development of the world's first 50 nm-class 2Gb DDR3 DRAM. Now, just five months after, it has established the industry's broadest line-up of high-performance DDR3 products using 50 nm-class process technology (4Gb, 2Gb, 1Gb).

As forecasts have the amount of memory per server doubling every two years, the development of high-density DRAM is expected to keep pace, expanding to other applications such as notebooks and desktop PCs.

According to the International Data Corporation (IDC), a market research and analysis firm, the worldwide DDR3 DRAM market will account for 29 percent of the total DRAM market in 2009 and 75 percent in 2011. In addition, IDC estimates that 2Gb-or-higher DDR3 DRAM will make up three percent of the total DRAM market in 2009 and 33 percent in 2011 (units in bits).

Samsung unveils faster 256GB solid state drives

By Koushik Saha on 20.11.08

Samsung has begun mass producing 256 gigabyte (GB) solid state drives for use in notebooks and desktop PCs, featuring double the performance of Samsung's currently available 64GB and 128GB models.

The new 256GB SSD combine sequential read rates of 220MB/s with sequential write rates of 200MB/s. This sharply narrows the performance gap between read and write operations to only 10 percent, compared to a read-write speed difference of between 20 and 70 percent for other SSDs. In addition, erase cycles are a rapid 100GBs per minute, allowing the entire drive to be re-written much faster, when needed.

Getting our exceptionally high performing 256GB SSD in a notebook is analogous to having a 15,000rpm drive, without all of its size, noise, power and heating drawbacks," said Jim Elliott, vice president, memory marketing, Samsung Semiconductor, Inc.The Samsung 256GB SSD expedites data transfer when large multimedia files are simultaneously read and stored. It can store 25 high-definition movies in just 21 minutes, a significant advancement over a 7200rpm hard disk drive (HDD), which takes about 70 minutes. Furthermore, the 256GB SSD launches applications 10 times faster than the fastest 7200rpm notebook HDD.The 256GB SSD?s performance can be attributed to a new, optimized, single platform design consisting of a chip controller, NAND flash and special drive firmware all developed by Samsung. This single platform is designed to easily adapt to Samsung?s 40nm class NAND flash memory.

Also offering a high degree of energy efficiency, the new drive consumes 1.1 watts of power versus two or more watts for a comparable HDD. The high operating speed of the 256GB SSD translates into longer periods in either stand-by or idle mode resulting in up to 40 minutes of extended operation on a single battery charge.

Similar in weight to a 128GB SSD (81 grams), the 2.5-inch multi-level cell (MLC) 256GB SSD retains the standard 9.5 millimeter (mm) drive thickness.

Samsung's 256GB SSD is also available with optional proprietary encryption programming that provides full disk encryption, a key feature for many corporate users.

World's Brightest LCD Panel from samsung

By Koushik Saha on 13.11.08

The most important factors in any display solution designed especially for digital signage applications are its size and its brightness, ensuring the fact that the images will be clearly visible even in bright sunshine. However, none of the models currently available on the market will be able to compete against Samsung's latest development, a 70-inch panel touted by its manufacturer to be the world's brightest, with a light output of 2000 nits.

According to the company's statement, this digital information display (DID) is one-third brighter than the previous model and has been designed to optimally accommodate the wide range of lighting conditions affecting outdoor displays. Besides providing around 4 times the brightness of most consumer-grade HDTVs, the device also sports a brightness-control option, which actually allows operators to "dim it down" during nighttime. Moreover, by using local dimming LED technology, the DID LCD panel manages to keep power consumption as low as possible by adjusting picture brightness in very precise "localized" increments, thereby avoiding having to brighten areas that don’t require it.

One of the main advantages provided by this local dimming technology is related to the contrast ratio, which achieves a very impressive value, of 200,000:1. Other features worth mentioning are the Full-HD (1080p) screen resolution with 16.7 million colors, plus some very good viewing angles, namely 178 degrees on both horizontal and vertical directions.

The panel weighs 80 kilograms, is 1630mm (millimeters) wide by 952mm high by 129.6mm deep, and can be used in either portrait or landscape format, thus making it pretty versatile. Unfortunately, no pricing details have been provided, but Samsung claims that the first samples of this "super-bright" display will be available by the year's end, with mass production most likely scheduled to start at some point in early 2009.

Blu-ray Player Prices to go down for the Holiday Season

By Koushik Saha on 11.11.08

The need for healthy holiday sales in a bear market, competitive pressure from movie download services, and media speculation about the future success of the Blu-ray format itself has resulted in falling Blu-ray player prices across a range of current and older models, according to ABI Research.

Tier 2 players and older models (6-9 months) are now widely available under $200. Amazon is offering a Samsung model bundled with four discs for that price. Holiday season prices may be in the $150-200 range. All of this runs counter to many of the industry?s original market forecasts and expectations.

"Blu-ray vendors and dealers are starting to realize that for Blu-ray to become the next DVD, they need to lower player prices in order to generate interest and build volumes," comments ABI Research principal analyst Steve Wilson."They are also getting more competition than they expected from download alternatives such as Xbox 360 and the Roku Netflix player, TiVo and Amazon. However downloads provide an opportunity as well as a threat: both LG and Samsung have concluded agreements with Netflix that allow some of their players to download movies and TV shows straight from Netflix. The more the Blu-ray players adopt these download capabilities, the better they will be able to differentiate themselves from standard DVD players."

Despite the low proces, Blu-ray sales are also expected to suffer in the fourth quarter, thanks to the shaky economy. Generally, economy dictates the level of investment companies will put into development and marketing, and perceptions of economic health are a critical factor in consumer purchase decisions. And the current economic slowdown could mean that consumers would be cautious in their spendings in the upcoming holiday season and especially for pricey Blu-ray players and discs.

Samsung report believes that Blu-ray may die in 5 years

By Koushik Saha on 5.9.08

When 2008 started, everyone hoped to see a conclusion of the next-generation DVD format war between Toshiba's HD DVD and Sony's Blu-ray. In the end, Blu-ray has officially won this "battle," with Toshiba admitting defeat and moving on to other segments of the CE market. However, this victory might be relatively short-lived (compared to the lifespan of the DVD format, for example), at least according to what a Samsung manager has to say.

Thus, in an interview for the Pocket-lint website, Andy Griffiths, director of consumer electronics at Samsung UK, stated that the format backed by Sony "has 5 years left," then adding that he "certainly wouldn't give it 10." Nevertheless, the format will most likely enjoy a huge level of success over the course of 2008 and the next 2-3 years, before its possible rivals emerge. Moreover, Samsung seems to be taking a pretty big slice of this pie, the company's standalone players enjoying a considerable level of success.Unfortunately, the Samsung representative doesn't point out any technologies as a possible Blu-ray replacement, and it's quite difficult to place a bet on just what the respective tech will be, especially since there are so many to choose from: flash memory, cloud-like computing environments, holographic storage... who knows, sky's the limit.

OK, so all in all, this might be just the personal opinion of Mr. Griffiths. However, since he's a top-executive of one of the world's largest consumer electronics manufacturers, he might actually be on to something.

Actually, if this prediction turns out to be right, we might witness a very strange situation: the parallel death of both last-gen (DVD) and next-gen (Blu-ray) optical discs, since the DVD will most likely still be around in 5 years. Yes, folks, the future's a very interesting one...

Samsung brings low priced new SSDs

Samsung is attempting to answer the question of how low can you go while doing the solid state limbo. The semiconductor company this week said it has begun sampling low-density, higher-performance solid state drives (SSDs) measuring just 30 percent the size of 2.5-inch SSDs. Samsung also says they're highly cost-efficient to manufacture, which should help the technology continue to penetrate the mainstream market."We've refined our manufacturing techniques and redesigned our low-density SSDs to get what the low-priced PC market is looking for in the way of improved cost, performance, and availability," said Jim Elliot, VP of memory marking.

Available in 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB flavors, the new multi-level cell SSDs will use the same SATA II controller found on Samsung's recently introduced MLC-based 128GB SSD. The company says the 32GB SSD will read data at 90MB/s and write at 70MB/s, while the 16GB will sport read and write times of 90MB/s and 45MB/s. Bringing up the rear, the 8GB model will also read at 90MB, but write at 25MB/s.

Mass production will start in September 2008. And mass consumption? That question remains to be answered.

Serenata Mobile from Samsung

By Koushik Saha on 25.8.08

The Serenata features a pebble like design so much so that if it weren't for its shiny metal it would easily camouflage itself. Most people for sure will hold it the wrong way the first time. Even though I knew it, it took me a while before I could get the phone out of my pocket and hold it right.
What makes it so difficult is the positioning of the screen. The screen is down and a click wheel placed above. It's a very bold design step for which many will criticize the phone. More on that later in the review.

The face of the phone first sees an all-metal large click wheel with a button in the center and four buttons on the click wheel. The left and right clicks are the calling keys while the top is a Clear/Delete button and down is the back button. The screen below has touch buttons, one in each corner and depending on application; even the center is a touch button. While the top left corner is dedicated to Music the top right corner brings up extra options depending on which menu you are in.The phone doesn't have any buttons placed on the sides, just one connector at the bottom of the phone to charge, connect headphones or dock it. The connector has a sliding dust cover to prevent particles from entering into the circuitry of the phone.

This is good considering that this phone is going to be kept standing while being used as an audio player most of the time. There is no camera in the back or front, just a stainless steel piece featuring a brushed metal finish to keep the phone standing when its loudspeaker is pulled out.

Yea, just like in the Samsung i450 mobile phone or the Samsung YP-K2 MP3 player, which have a speaker that slides out. The Serenata has a large loudspeaker. With this design you can have the phone sitting on a table by itself or on a dock and playing the tunes loaded into its internal memory. To insert the SIM card or change the battery you have to open the flip stand and slide up the speaker before you're able to open the battery compartment.

The phone has a very good build quality. High quality rubberized plastics are used for the edges and the back of the phone, except for the flip stand. The face of the phone also features a lot of the same metal seen for the stand.

The KC910 will be going up against the other 8 megapixel camera phones out there like Samsung’s INNOV8 and of course SE’s C905 both of which happen to be sliders unlike the 910 which is simply a touch screen handset. It has a 3-inch TFT touch screen with a 240 x 400 pixel resolution and 256k colors. Aside from the 8MP auto-focus camera that uses Schneider-Kreuznach optics and has a Xenon flash, it’s able to record video with VGA (30fps) and QVGA (120fps) quality. The camera also uses a geo-tagging feature that works in tandem with its onboard GPS receiver. With regards to connectivity the handset supports Wi-fi, 3G with HSDPA, Bluetooth with A2DP support and of course USB connectivity as well.

The KC910 also has a lot to offer in the media department with a preloaded codec that supports Xvid and DivX video playback and Dolby sound for music. Other features also include microSD support for external memory and a TV out feature. Reports also state that unlike the other 8MP camera phones I mentioned, this one will be thinner considering it doesn’t have a keypad.
The LG KC910 is an upgrade to the KU990 Viewty. Although no official price has been announced the handset should be in stores by October.
