Nokia's first smartphone powered by Microsoft

Last week, Nokia unveiled to the world their first smartphones powered by Microsoft's Windows Phone operating system, namely the Nokia Lumia 800 and the Lumia 710, but it seems that these are not the only Mango handsets that the company has been already working on.

At the Design Museum in Shad, Thames, in the UK, the vendor put on display another Windows Phone device, one that was not seen before.

No specific details on what this device is all about have emerged until now, but some suggest that it could be one of the upcoming Windows Phone handsets that Nokia has in store for us.

“Nokia Products that changed the world' is an exhibition currently on at the Design Museum in Shad, Thames. Let us know what our favourite Nokia is in the Time Machine and be in with a chance to win prizes,” Nokia notes on its Facebook page, where the photo to the left can be seen.

Some suggest that this device would be the same Nokia 900 smartphone that was rumored only days before Nokia went official with its first two Windows Phones last week, and which was said to be on its way to the market as the Nokia Ace.

However, the specificationslist of the rumored Nokia 900 were strikingly resembling those of Nokia Lumia 800, and chances are that the rumor was actually about one and the same smartphone.

As for the handset that can be seen in the photo that Nokia put on its Facebook page, it does not seem to closely resemble the already made official handsets, nor the rumored Nokia 900, at least not when the outer design is involved.

Undoubtedly, Nokia will bring to the market some great new Windows Phones in the not-too-distant future, since the company already announced that it aims at launching many more new handsets powered by Microsoft's mobile OS, and chances are that slim, highly appealing phones as the one in the photo above will also be there.

Samsung secures top position in Smart Phone market

Samsung and Apple aren't on good terms with each other as we all know. Both the companies are slamming lawsuits at each other left and right. Not much is spoken about the other aspect of the rivalry, the sales numbers. Apple has been leading the pack for quite a while now with its sales numbers surpassing Samsung's and Nokia's numbers fairly easily. Well, that is history now for Samsung has made its way to the top as the number one manufacturer in the world (in terms of sales) with 23.6 million shipments reported during Q3, with Apple coming in at second place with 17.3 million shipments. These numbers were calculated by IDC, which is a well known research firm. Therefore, Samsung now has 20% of the share of the global smartphone market while Apple is at 15%. Nokia's figures have dramatically dropped with the company losing half of its market share from the last quarter. The Finnish mobile manufacturer had 28% of the total smartphone market share during Q2 and now it has only 14%. RIM's market share also has taken a beating coming down to 10% from 15%. HTC, however, has crept up to the top five list with about 11% of the market share now. That's a growth of 4% from the last quarter. It is importantto bear in mind that shipments do not actually reflect into sales.

So what do these figures tell us? Well, Apple doesn't rule the smartphone segment anymore, though it is being said that the wait for the new iPhone might have been a contributing factor for the low sales. Q4's numbers will give us a better idea of where the companies stand, since by then, most brands will have a flagship of their own. Nokia will have the Lumia in the market, while the iPhone 4S is almost a month old and Samsung is looking at the launch of the Galaxy Nexus. We don't have the numbers on the profits that these companies made but we figure Apple would top that list since it only has a couple of smartphones in its inventory. Either way, Samsung is now sitting right on top and we expect the company to do well in the current quarter as well.

Cell phones now have become an integral part of our life and so does the person who talks with us. But to get a good cell phone from the market it becomes a tedious job for everyone of us. Even some times if someone buy any handset its performance is not as good as he/she has expected of. This thing has happened with me a lot number of times. Then suddenly i got to know about a site called consumermate.com.
This is a very good website dealing with wide range of electronics accessories starting from mobile phone to music player and many more. But the more interesting section I found here was mobile section. In other website you will observe that mobile set are displayed but there are no proper information provided to you so that you can take decision , whether you buy it or not. This website has a number of facilities like you can compare any number of mobile phone with other phones so that you can have a clear cut idea about which one is good. This site also provide you about handset price which you will often not find in other website. One can search for nokia phones India, Motorola, Samsung, HTC, LG, Videocon, Micromax etc and can also see their features. This site aslo provides you the best price in the market which you can easily afford. So last but not the least anyone who is going to buy any handset must have a look at this site and take any decision.

Motorola's Android

As we noted on previous occasions as well, just lately, nothing too spectacular came from Motorola, the only two devices that were, according to general belief, worthy of more attention being the ROKR and the ZN – and that's about it. Were we to compare Motorola with Sony Ericsson or Nokia, in terms of the “wow factor” in handsets, it's crystal clear that it comes on the last position, having recently managed to show a complete lack thereof.

One possible reason for this could be the fact that, as of late, Motorola has seemingly focused its efforts on expanding its Android team from 50 to 350 members. So, it was somehow expected for the manufacturer to post a job add somewhere in order to get more people, since 350 is not a figure that can be so easily attained.

And this is precisely what happened, according to Android Guys, who claim that Motorola posted a job add for a Senior Staff Interaction Designer on Coroflot, saying that the candidate, among other things, would also participate in the development of the UI for the company’s new Android Social Networking Smartphone. While the job does not sound half that bad, there is something that doesn’t quite click about it. Now, the website features only one Motorola job, and it is for a Senior Manager, User Experience Design. So what could all this mean? Either that Motorola removed the add in the meantime, or that it never existed in the first place.Either way, provided the rumors are true, this could mean that Motorola is really into developing a strong competitor for HTC's G1, since social networking is becoming a more important part in the 3G mobile world.

Furthermore, seeing how the company has not been on a winning streak as of late, having to deal with several financial issues, developing a blockbuster device would only seem the right direction to take. Let's not forget that Motorola was one of the original partners of the Open Handset Alliance, which is behind the open-source mobile OS, the Android platform.

Touchscreen N-Series soon by Nokia

It seemed highly unlikely for Nokia to keep the N-series basic – if basic is a term that can be used to describe this series. One thing that was certain, however, was that the Finnish company would do something innovative and take the phones one step further.

Rumors have been circulating for some time regarding touchscreen technology added to the future N-series phones, and this weekend, they were confirmed. At a Nokia event in New Delhi, Devinder Kishore, director of marketing, Nokia India, said that, “We will have lot of touchscreen phones coming up, including an N-series device very soon.”

The N-series from Nokia is known as a product family that brings users multimedia smartphones supporting digital multimedia services like music playback, video capture, photography, this together with the mobile gaming experience and Internet services. It would quite abnormal if an N-series device did not support at least one high-speed wireless technology like 3G or Wireless LAN.Lately, the N-series phones have showed their high degree of versatility, when director Mike Hodgkinson filmed Eskimohunter's Surfing at 32°F video using N95, N93 and N93i. “Everything I imagined, the Nokia Nseries devices let me create. I really wanted to push the Nokia equipment to its limits, and each responded brilliantly. I’ve taken Nseries devices underwater, attached them to helium balloons and dangled them 100 feet above the Los Angeles River… and I’ve never lost a shot.” Hodgkinson said.

Going back to what Devinder Kishore said, we must take in consideration what "very soon" might mean, since it is unsure whether we'll get to see the new N-series touchscreen phones at the end of this year or at the beginning of 2009. Either way, let's hope that we'll have more information coming our way really soon, and perhaps even some leaked images of a touchscreen N-series device.

Nokia launched dual slider N96

By Koushik Saha on 19.8.08

Nokia’s much awaited, fully loaded, dual slider, the N96, has been unveiled in India almost a month and a half before the UK launch that was set to be the first. Bravo - is what I have to say. This cross between the N81 with its glossy trims and the N95’s dual slide component makes for a great handset overall.I’ve mentioned the specs of this handset more times than is perhaps necessary but it does seem like quite an exciting handset. Take it from me, since I’ve been lucky enough to play around with a prototype. The N96 has a 2.8-inch TFT display with a 240 x 320 pixel resolution and 16 million colors. It runs on a Dual ARM 9 264 MHz CPU and comes with 128MB RAM, 256MB storage memory and a whopping 16GB of internal memory as well as microSD card support in case you feel that 16GB is just not enough. The handset also has an accelerometer for automatically rotating the display.
For net connectivity the N96 is equipped with Wi-Fi, 3G support with HSDPA speeds, EDGE class 32, GPRS/WAP, Bluetooth with A2DP and microUSB v2.0 for data transfer. When it comes to multimedia the N96 should feel like a pro with a 5 MP auto-focus camera with Carl Zeiss optics. It’s also capable of video capture (VGA 30fps) and it comes with an LED flash which in my opinion is not a good thing since the N82 has a Xenon, but ok. Just around the camera’s lens is a kickstand that when opened allows the handset to be propped up for comfort of viewing. The N96 also has a secondary VGA videocall camera in front.
Thankfully the N96 comes equipped with a 3.5mm earphone socket that doubles as TV Out. It even has an FM radio with RDS and Visual Radio. It also has 3D stereo speakers and supports the N-Gage application for gaming. The handset comes with an inbuilt GPS module (Nokia Maps 2.0 pre-loaded) and also supports A-GPS. It also has a DVB-H TV broadcast receiver. Other features include a document reader and a built in handsfree but that’s nothing new.

The Nokia N96 comes pre-bundled with WaveSecure, an application that allows consumers to secure everything on the device wirelessly. One can save and create a back up of all data (contacts, SMS, call logs and calendar entries) through the Internet. Additionally, in the event that it is lost or stolen, WaveSecure helps remotely wipe out all data from the device to prevent misuse, lock the device remotely and even track any new SIM card inserted.
Speaking of pre-loaded features, Nokia has been gracious enough to the Indian audience by providing plenty of Bollywood freebies. The N96 will come preloaded with the movie ‘Om Shanti Om’, 50 music videos, music tracks in Hindi and English and 3 N-Gage games with an unlimited license on for the 3rd edition of Asphalt Urban. It will also have 3 country Nokia Maps that include Singapore, UAE and of course India and a 3 month Navigation license for 8 Indian cities.

The handset will hit stores at an estimated price of around Rs. 36,000 but there is no official word on the same. In case you’re wondering if this beats the iPhone due to launch in a couple of days, why don’t you be smart about it and wait till we’re done giving them a thorough once over.

The handset can be pre-booked by logging on to www.nokia.co.in/n96 and registering, though it'll be on shelves only in September. Just follow the instructions but know this - a booking amount of Rs. 4000 will need to be paid.

Sony has announced the new slim phone, the Sony Ericsson T700. At a thickness of 10mm, the phone falls into the sleek and slim category, which includes Motorola L6 and L7 as well as Nokia 6300 and 5310 Xpress Music.
Packed with moderate features, T700 bears a faint resemblance with the T650 in the T-Series phones. Touted as a mid-range phone, the sleek and shiny T700 is impressive in terms of price point and form factor, although it s not high on any new functionality. The 3.2 megapixel camera allows has self-portrait mirror options, which allows the more narcissistic users to click themselves. But T700 with the 3.2 megapixel camera fails to impress as it lacks the Auto Focus feature. The phone also sports built-in stereo speakers, which can t be compared to the Walkman series phones. The best part of the deal for consumers is that this mid-range phone supports EDGE, UMTS and single-band HSDPA for data connectivity.

Nokia has unveiled a new range of mobile phones called Supernova, aimed at the style conscious individuals who aren’t just interested in style but functionality as well.

This handset offers Xpress-On covers in a choice of a set of 'steel blue' and 'red' covers offset by a muted gray front surface, or 'bright lilac' and 'steel blue' contrasted against a pristine white front surface. The innovative 'Theme Colorizer' featurelets people identify and capture any color and further tailor a look by applying captured colors to the phone's key illumination and wallpaper.
Additional features include a 3.2 megapixel camera with dual LED flash and 8x digital zoom, instant messaging and TV out for image sharing. With the Nokia 7610 Supernova, consumers can also enjoy and manage music with a dedicated music key, FM-radio, an MP3 player and access to Nokia Music Store through the Nokia Music PC Client. The Nokia WidSets service gives access to enjoy and share content on favorite websites through the device.

Nokia going to unveil 40 Eco-friendly Handsets

Nokia is reportedly planning on doing a rather large bit for the environment by launching close to 40 biodegradable handsets by the end of the year. They’ve already started things off with their 3110 Evolve and designs for their Eco Sensor. While these handsets may have either left the drawing board or still be on it, one wonders how a mobile phone that needs metal parts or components could be made biodegradable.

According to sources, D. Shivakumar, VP and managing director, Nokia India, said that the company would be using biodegradable phone covers, recyclable battery designs that use less harmful toxic materials and energy efficient accessories for all their forthcoming phones and that they'd already eliminated the use of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) in all their phones.
Apparently in the US, Nokia includes envelopes in the sales packs that have a return address with postage paid, specifically for consumers to return used handsets etc. to the company for recycling. The company is planning on having special Green Bins in India located at priority centers to make things even more convenient for consumers to drop off their old handsets. Some of their other ‘Green’ attempts are to train their employees working in the distribution and priority centers to advice consumers on recycling issues.

What I’d like to understand is who would do something like that in our country. The strategy here of course is to exchange your old handset for a new one. It’s rather unlikely that a consumer would simply drop off an unused handset into a box with no remuneration for its worth.

But you have to hand it to Nokia for at least trying. The other manufacturers are also getting into the groove of keeping things as green as they can and all I have to say is it’s about time.

There's been a significant change in status quo in the Indian mobile phone market during the first quarter of the new year (Jan-Mar 08), with hitherto third-largest player Motorola effectively displaced by Korean handset maker Samsung, reports a leading business daily.

The report cites ORG data to reveal Nokia as retaining top slot followed by Sony Ericsson still at second place while Samsung beating Motorola to emerge the new third-largest player in the Indian handset market. The spotlight is on Samsung as the only major player to have increased market share from 5.7 percent in Jan to 7 percent in March; Motorola, by contrast to have simultaneously lost market share from 6.7 percent in Jan to 5.9 percent in March. And though Nokia did manage to notch top slot, ORG data shows the company to have actually lost market share from 72.3 percent in Jan to 69.5 percent in March. Meanwhile, Sony Ericsson is shown to have maintained 8.1 percent market share from Jan through March.

Samsung claims the increase in market share is due to factors including their channel expansion program, new product launches, and brand activity involving Aamir Khan. Motorola meanwhile attributes the decrease in market share to a change in company focus from entry-level to mid-to-high end phones.
