Samsung and Apple aren't on good terms with each other as we all know. Both the companies are slamming lawsuits at each other left and right. Not much is spoken about the other aspect of the rivalry, the sales numbers. Apple has been leading the pack for quite a while now with its sales numbers surpassing Samsung's and Nokia's numbers fairly easily. Well, that is history now for Samsung has made its way to the top as the number one manufacturer in the world (in terms of sales) with 23.6 million shipments reported during Q3, with Apple coming in at second place with 17.3 million shipments. These numbers were calculated by IDC, which is a well known research firm. Therefore, Samsung now has 20% of the share of the global smartphone market while Apple is at 15%. Nokia's figures have dramatically dropped with the company losing half of its market share from the last quarter. The Finnish mobile manufacturer had 28% of the total smartphone market share during Q2 and now it has only 14%. RIM's market share also has taken a beating coming down to 10% from 15%. HTC, however, has crept up to the top five list with about 11% of the market share now. That's a growth of 4% from the last quarter. It is importantto bear in mind that shipments do not actually reflect into sales. So what do these figures tell us? Well, Apple doesn't rule the smartphone segment anymore, though it is being said that the wait for the new iPhone might have been a contributing factor for the low sales. Q4's numbers will give us a better idea of where the companies stand, since by then, most brands will have a flagship of their own. Nokia will have the Lumia in the market, while the iPhone 4S is almost a month old and Samsung is looking at the launch of the Galaxy Nexus. We don't have the numbers on the profits that these companies made but we figure Apple would top that list since it only has a couple of smartphones in its inventory. Either way, Samsung is now sitting right on top and we expect the company to do well in the current quarter as well.

AT&T Inc. said Wednesday its BlackBerry Bold smart phone will go on sale Nov. 4 starting at US$299.99 with a two-year contract.
The device will operate on AT&T's HSDPA network in more than 300 U.S. cities and on similar networks in 60 countries, including Korea and Japan, the carrier said.
The Bold was first announced in May, when rumors first circulated about the BlackBerry Thunder, which Verizon Wireless will begin selling later in the year. The Bold had earlier been referred to as the BlackBerry 9000.
The Bold features a smaller screen than the Thunder, but it also has a QWERTY keyboard, instead of an on-screen keyboard. It boasts a powerful 624-MHz mobile processor, with 1GB of onboard storage, which can be upgraded to 16GB with an SD expansion slot. Built-in GPS and Wi-Fi are also provided.
AT&T said that the Bold can run cellular video and mobile music services, but also noted that it will work with the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, allowing advanced IT administration and security. Verizon Wireless has touted both the consumer and business-user qualities of the BlackBerry Storm as well, noting that IT managers have come to rely on BlackBerry security more than other devices. The announcement of Bold's availability came on the same day that T-Mobile USA Inc. put the G1 Android phone on sale, amid a season of smart-phone launches that included the July iPhone 3G launch by Apple Inc.
Motorola Inc. this week also said it is building its own Android phone, with a touch screen and slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

Here’s what we know about BlackBerry’s “Thunder” Storm - the 9500. It has a 3.25-inch TFT touch screen display with a 320 x 480 pixel resolution and an accelerometer for auto screen rotation. It has a 3.5mm earphone socket (thank you), microSD slot for external memory (8GB cards are good to go) and 1GB of internal storage to play around with. The 9500 also has a 3.2 megapixel auto-focus camera with an LED flash, a media player that supports DivX and XviD formats, internal GPS (with A-GPS) using Blackberry Maps, support for Stereo Bluetooth and USB v2.0. It's also a 3G ready handset, not that it matters to us at the moment. The 9500 Storm employs some cutting edge technology like the world's first “clickable” touch-screen that responds like a physical keyboard and also supports single-touch, multi-touch and gestures for intuitive and efficient application navigation.“We are proud to introduce the first touch-screen based BlackBerry smartphone together with Verizon Wireless and Vodafone,” said Mike Lazaridis, president and co-chief executive officer at RIM. “The BlackBerry Storm is a revolutionary touch-screen smartphone that meets both the communications and multimedia needs of customers and solves the longstanding problem associated with typing on traditional touch-screens. Consumers and business customers alike will appreciate this unique combination of a large and vibrant screen with a truly tactile touch interface.”Specs aside here’s the big news. The BlackBerry 9500 Storm is going to be launched (according to the RIM) quite soon right here in India via Vodafone. There’s still no price yet so, stay tuned.

Research In Motion Ltd. on Monday is introducing its first major new BlackBerry model in more than a year: the Bold, a high-end model that further demonstrates the company's desire to make tools for both work and play.
The Bold, or 9000, has twice the screen resolution of the current Curve model, making for a very sharp display. It matches the resolution, but not the size, of the screen on Apple Inc.'s iPhone, which has emerged as a potent competitor in the ''smart phone'' category.
It also has much more internal memory, a glossy metallic look, and adds corporate-strength Wi-Fi capabilities to third-generation cellular and Bluetooth radios.Otherwise it stays close to the formula of the Curve, with a horizontal screen above a trackball and a keyboard with one letter per key.
Waterloo, Ontario-based RIM didn't announce a price for the Bold, nor agreements with specific carriers. It said the phone would be available from various carriers this summer.
The initial model would support GSM networks, the kind employed by AT&T Inc. and T-Mobile USA. Later models could work on the Sprint Nextel Corp. and Verizon Wireless networks, according to RIM co-chief executive Mike Lazaridis.
Like the Curve and the Pearl, BlackBerry's consumer-oriented phones, the Bold has a full-size headset jack and a camera that can also capture video. At the same time, it has dual-band Wi-Fi, a feature previously only found on a model aimed at the corporate market.
The Bold will also have exchangable back plates in different colors, a first for a BlackBerry.
RIM also was set to announce a $150 million fund that will invest in companies creating software for BlackBerrys and other mobile devices. The Royal Bank of Canada and Thomson Reuters are co-investors.
The BlackBerry Partners Fund will be managed by JLA Ventures and RBC Venture Partners.
The move echoes Apple's March announcement that it would set up a $100 million ''iFund'' for the development of iPhone and iPod Touch applications.

BlackBerry maker Research in Motion (RIM) has announced that it would soon unveil new smartphones with a mobile software that allows users access to business data "anytime, anywhere".
The Canadian leader in mobile connectivity said it has joined hands with German software giant SAP to install a mobile version of SAP's business management software in its devices that
will available in the market soon.
Though this customer relationship management (CRM) software is already installed in the BlackBerry and is used through a browser, its mobile version will put all information directly on the device. Mobile users will soon be able to work freely on SAP, no longer tied to their desktops or offices to perform their jobs. With the installation of SAP's mobile software, sales data, purchase orders, contact information, and customer records will become available on the BlackBerry. The device will also be GPS-enabled and capable of storing hours of video data, which could be used for training sales people while they are traveling.
"Just as the BlackBerry wireless platform has transformed the way people use email, SAP and RIM will bring the power and productivity of SAP enterprise applications to the BlackBerry platform in a similarly robust and user-friendly manner," the statement said.
By tearing down the walls between enterprise computing and mobile connectivity, it said, SAP and RIM will enhance employee productivity.
The statement said their partnership will merge the power of CRM software with core BlackBerry smartphone applications, including email, address book and calendar applications, to "deliver an indispensable tool for sales people".
"SAP is thrilled to bolster its long-standing relationship with RIM through the co-development of this breakthrough offering," Bill McDermott, president and CEO of SAP Americas and Asia Pacific Japan, was quoted as saying.
"By combining RIM's expertise for empowering the mobile worker and SAP's strength in business computing, we are embarking on an exciting future to make it easier and more convenient for today's business users to perform their jobs.
"Our extended partnership with RIM will open many new doors for mobile workers around the world who require real-time mobile access to enterprise applications in a secure setting," McDermott said.
As per the data by research firm IDC, 800 million professionals – about 25.7 percent of the workforce – used mobiles worldwide last year. This figure will touch the one billion mark by 2011, leading to a fierce competition among BlackBerry, Apple's iPhone and Nokia.

CNBC-TV18's Sandeep Gurumurthi reports that Tata Teleservices' application to offer BlackBerry Services in India has been rejected after the Department of Telecom (DoT) forwarded the request to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
Anil Sardana, Managing Director of TTSL, told reporters in New Delhi this morning that they were told by the MHA that the BlackBerry service does not allow for "lawful interception" mandated for all Value Added Services (VAS).Sources tell CNBC-TV18 that when Tata Tele asked DoT why other operators were being allowed, the DoT fired off letters to existing BlackBerry providers seeking an explanation. Sources also say that two rounds of discussion have happened between these operators and the MHA. A final call is expected to be taken in a meeting with the Telecom Secretary next week.A spokesperson from RIM – the company that offers the BlackBerry service – said: "RIM supports its carrier partners in India and we will work together with them to seek further clarity."
Security experts we spoke to were sceptical of the claim, saying that in June last year the French government had advised officials not to use BlackBerry services for precisely the opposite reasons. At that time, officals at RIM claimed that even they did not have access to the data on their servers (a questionable claim in itself), an explanation that could have them in a spot when they meet with Indian authorities.
Of course, we at Tech2.com are also sceptical about the national security bogey being brought up on every occasion. Indeed, the last thing the increasingly tech-savvy terrorist is likely to use is a BlackBerry. After all, he will either have to use corporate email or operator-provided mail (@blackberry.airtel.in, for example) both of which are easily traceable – it's not like RIM is a company that's going to disappear overnight.
