Sony has launched a PlayStation Channel on YouTube, where gamers will be able to watch features on upcoming titles, game trailers, developer interviews etc. This is the first step towards their YouTube integration, and they'll eventually make it such that PS3 owners will be able to upload gameplay videos directly from their console, to the PlayStation Channel. This feature will be available with the upcoming title LittleBigPlanet, (which is due for an October 21 release), which will also get its own YouTube channel.Let's hope that they implement it in such a way that it works across all games, because as of now recording gameplay footage off consoles is a real pain in the backside. If this happens, you can even expect a lot of new machinima videos floating around!Read d rest...

According to Softpedia, As the Beijing Olympics just opened, Google announced the launch of a new website that comprises the latest news in the sports world, videos of the competitions provided by YouTube, or 3D models of the stadiums that host the events, created with the Google SketchUp. The events schedule and a medal count, either for sports or for regions, are offered to Google users on a mobile platform. The website is available in 66 countries and in 31 languages, as Dylan Casey, Product Manager at Google, reveals. The satellite imagery was also updated, in order to offer users who cannot attend the games a virtual experience to match the intensity of the genuine one. Moreover, the possibility of seeing details that range from stadium seats to racing tracks makes the Internet experience even more enjoyable."To track medal counts, click on the 'Medals' tab and zoom or pan the map to see updates around the world. Clicking on a country or region will display medal information as it's received. Use the 'Events' tab to view the latest schedules by date, country, and sport. All data – including country and region participants, sport results, and medal counts – is provided through an official feed from the World News Press Agency", explains Brittany Bohnet, Google Maps Special Projects.
Dylan Casey, the team member who announced the launch of the new Google site on the company’s official blog, was actually a member of the U.S. Olympic team himself. Born in 1971, the Google fellow made it into the team that competed at the Olympics in Sydney, in 2000. "Even though I didn’t walk away with any medals then, training and competing involved a herculean effort - but that pales in comparison to what we’re unveiling today." says Casey, drawing a parallel between his performance as a sportsman and his achievements with Google.

After the launch of Google Knol, Aaron Wall of SEO Book.com takes a scalpel to the service and observes that Google might be favouring content produced in-house. First he points to an experiment of Danny Sullivan (of search engine land), and concludes that, "[...] from the above data and the aggressive promotion of YouTube content after the roll out of universal search it is fair to state that house content is favored by the Google algorithm."Aaron then proceeded to create an SEO Knol which uses the same content he has used on Work.com and also syndicated to Business.com. While querying specific content, he found that Google ranks his Knol content higher than the same content on Business.com (which should ideally PageRank higher, being a noted authority). This leads him to the conclusion that one could very well copy other's content, put it on a Google Knol, and rank higher than the original content: "Some may call this the Query Deserves Freshness algorithm, but one might equally decide to call it the copyright work deserves to be stolen algorithm", he says, "Google knows the content is duplicate (as proven by the notification they put on their page), and yet they prefer to rank their own house content over the originally published source."He concludes the post by saying that "Google doesn't like cheating, unless it favors their business objectives".
If this in-house favouring is true, and a future trend instead of teething problems for a new service, then it is a can of worms that Google has opened. Original content should rank higher, especially if said content is on a page with a higher PageRank and thus -- authority. This is the essence of what makes Google Search objective and reliable. If Google decides to bypass its own policy, for its own products, it can't be good for the greater web.

Google is currently exploring all possible methods of milking the Youtube cow despite having deemed revenues from the website to be immaterial during it Q1 filing. It has now dawned upon Google that professionally made content is more lucrative to advertisers than amateur videos, and can help it recover the $1.65 billion Youtube acquisition costs. The search engine major’s enlightenment will greatly benefit Hollywood companies, who have been clamoring about the ease with which their interests are compromised on piracy hotbeds like Youtube.Google knows that to monetize copyrighted movie and TV videos with advertisements it will have to legitimize their use first, which it plans to do with revenue sharing deals with major Hollywood studios. It recently struck a revenue sharing deal with Lionsagate and is in talks with other media companies, although very little is known at this stage.
Does it mean that Google will completely prevent users from uploading copyrighted content - something it has failed to do hitherto? Most probably that won’t be the case as it is currently working on a new technology that will help identify copyrighted content and allow its rightful owners to display ads next to it without the video being taken down.

The hottest thing on YouTube this month isn't The Dark Knight trailer or that clip of a baby giving an evil eye. It's video of somebody downloading a copy of Ubuntu, a Linux-based operating system. How did something so completely boring top the list? The makers of UseNext, a download client that lets users grab files from Usenet newsgroups, are hosting a Usenet Download World Record contest to spread the gospel about their product. Users who submit a YouTube video detailing a hyperfast transfer are eligible for a $1,000 jackpot. To land the fat prize, UseNext users must download an Ubuntu image, videotape the download process and e-mail the clip. The fastest download wins.
As previously reported by Wired News, Usenet news groups are a hotbed of activity for file sharers looking for pirated movies in less-policed areas of the internet. Usenet news groups offer a level of anonymity not available through popular P2P sites like BitTorrent or Kazaa.

A study from Nemertes Research Group suggests the increasing use of video services such as YouTube could see the internet reach breaking point in just three years’ time. The research firm says the flood of new video content could overwhelm the web by 2010 unless backbone providers invest up to $137bn in new capacity, more than double what service providers plan to invest, according to the study. In North America alone, backbone investments of $42bn to $55bn will be needed in the next three to five years to keep up with demand, Nemertes said.
The study is the first to "apply Moore’s Law (or something very like it) to the pace of application innovation on the Net,” the study says. “Our findings indicate that although core fibre and switching/routing resources will scale nicely to support virtually any conceivable user demand, Internet access infrastructure, specifically in North America, will likely cease to be adequate for supporting demand within the next three to five years."
