Panasonic has unveiled a rugged ultra-mobile PC (UMPC), the Toughbook CF-U1, meant for field workers to be used in extreme environments.

Powered by Intel's new Atom processor, the CF-U1 integrates the robust features of a full-size Toughbook in an ultra-mobile form factor. About 7-inches wide, 6-inches deep, and 2-inches high, the UMPC is fitted with a 5.6-inches touch-screen viewable even in sunlight, QWERTY keyboard, 16GB solid state removable drive, 1GB memory, 2 mega pixels camera, and fingerprint scanner (optional). The Toughbook CF-U1 also comes with WiFi, Bluetooth, and 3G-mobile-Broadband internet connectivity.
"Panasonic has built the new Toughbook CF-U1 but our customers have designed it," said Kyp Walls, director (Product Management) at Panasonic Computer Solutions. "The form and functionality is a direct result of more than two years of feedback solicited from an array of government and commercial organizations seeking to address the needs of abroad range of mobile users," Walls said.

According to Panasonic, the rugged UMPC is built to thrive in environments as diverse as construction sites, mining operations, oil and gas refineries, manufacturing facilities, railroad yards, city streets, and storage warehouses.

The CF-U1, unlike other handhelds, operates on full-function Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems. It has a fan-less, all-weather design that results in reduced noise and weight, and eliminates points of failure, says Panasonic. The CF-U1 is claimed to offer around 9 hours battery life and comes with several docking options.

The new UMPC from Panasonic will be available worldwide in August this year for an estimated $2,499 from authorized Panasonic resellers and distributors.
