Japan's Hyper-Speed Internet 1.2 Giga bps

Who is putting the “broad” in broadband? Japan is!

The Kizuna, which means “wind”, satellite was launched and it looks like it will be capable of making broadband obsolete. They have introduced the hyper-band 1.2 Gbps - Giga Bits Per Second (Billion bits per second.) That’s a tornado-like 150 times faster than DSL and 12 times faster than the best fiber connection. It cost $342 million and is expected to become available in July 2008 “We’re talking super-high speed wireless Internet communication in a country that experiences dozens of moderate to major earthquakes each year, every year,” Inventorspot notes. “With KIZUNA orbiting above, uninterrupted communication can be maintained when a ground-based network is disrupted by an earthquake or any other natural disaster. Not only in Japan, mind you, but in almost any Asian country - the service will be available at 19 different locations across Southeast Asia.”

NEC flask phone ->power of fuel cell

NEC, the Japanese electronics manufacturer, recently unveiled a new concept phone that uses fuel cell as power. While the idea is not new,as Motorola, Samsung and Toshiba also consider implementing this technology into handsets, NEC's fuel cell phone is really something that we haven't seen until now.

The handset is apparently named NEC Flask Phone and, at a first glance, it looks like a giant lighter that Bigfoot might really love (if he exists and if he smokes). At a second glance, things seem a bit more serious, as this device is said to pack some sort of a touchscreen that also has the role of a keypad. The phone has a transparent case that allows users to see how much fuel is consumed, thus knowing when to recharge, and it's intended to be a device that perfectly integrates advanced technology and simple but elegant design. There are no technical details regarding the Flask Phone concept, so we don't know much about the nature of the fuel powering it or about the features the phone has to offer. However, judging by its appearance, it's hard to believe this NEC is able to offer multimedia features, so it will probably be a basic phone for calls, text messaging and maybe games – the transparent case and the visible liquid could offer an interesting gaming experience.

Although it seems a concept meant to be only a concept, the NEC Flask Phone might be ready to hit the market before the end of 2008, as the Japanese company is confident that such a phone can be created. Of course, there is no info on how much it would cost, nor about the countries that can get it, but if we are good fellas, this year's Christmas Santa might come with a mobile liquid surprise for us. And, why not, for Bigfoot too.

DS surpasses PS2 in Japanese lifetime sales

Nothing takes the edge off post-holiday depression like numerically-expressed dominance. The latest figures from Media Create show that the Nintendo DS has overtaken Sony's PlayStation 2 in lifetime sales in Japan. The holiday rush saw DS total sales reach 20,954,157, some 53,000 units more than the PS2—no small feat given the PS2's four-year head start on Nintendo's little white handheld.
The DS still has a long way to go for worldwide lifetime sales, having sold some 63 million units against the PS2's 120 million across the globe. But the DS is still moving units by the metric ton, with no sign of slowing down; lapping the PS2 on a global level may yet be a possibility. Though claims that Nintendo's recent shift in design philosophy have muscled out hardcore gamers aren't entirely without merit, it's hard to argue with the business end of their new strategy. Nintendo set out to make a space for gaming and generate revenue where there previously hadn't been any, and they've managed to do just that. For a system initially written off as a gimmick, the DS has certainly proven itself critically as well as commercially

iPhone coming to Japan's NTT DoCoMo?

According to the Wall Street Journal Asia, Jobs and Co are in Japan working out the details for a domestic iPhone launch. It's no surprise then that Jobs was rumored to have just met with NTT DoCoMo's president, Masao Nakamur, to discuss the deal with the largest carrier in the world's second-largest economy. As usual, Apple seems to be playing the carriers off one another with rumors that The Steve is courting Softbank as well. However, "people familiar with the situation" say that DoCoMo is the first choice. While the revenue sharing is a sticking point as usual, WSJA says that Apple doesn't expect to have any difficulty closing the deal. Funny, that's what everyone was saying about Vodafone in Europe.

P.S. For what it's worth, NTT DoCoMo does not run a GSM/EDGE network. Any iPhone released on DoCoMo's FOMA service will be HSDPA -- right, the 3G iPhone.
