AMD 880G chipset details unveiled

AMD AM3 processors (Athlon X4, Phenom II X3, Phenom II X4) will get a new 55nm chipset by Q3 next year. AMD 880G chipset will form part of the AMD Live! "Pisces" platform.AMD 880G will feature a integrated Radeon HD 3450 (RV620) DX10.1 graphics core, DDR3 support, HyperTransport 3.0, Universal Video Decoder 2 (UVD 2), Hybrid Crossfire with a discrete Radeon HD 3450 graphics core through a PCIe 2.0 x16 slot, Display Port/HDMI/DVI/SurroundView support. AMD 880G will be paired up with SB710 Southbridge offering 12 USB ports and 6 SATA ports.
AMD is also touting much on their new OverDrive 3.0 that support AM3 platforms featuring Smart Control that boost clockson demand, Application Specific Profiles that optimise system settings upon application detection and Hardware Monitoring support with fan control.

Deneb processors launch date unveiled by AMD

Advanced Micro Devices upcoming Deneb processors have made it to the headlines within the past few weeks, and, as their launch date closes even more, new info on them seem to surface every day. The chip maker has already announced that the new chips will come under the Phenom II brand, which will include the high-end models, while the low-end parts will be branded Athlon.According to the latest news, the first new line CPUs are expected to hit the market in January, on the 8th day of the month, to be more precise, and they will be compatible with the already-existing AM2 and AM2+ chipsets from the company. These chips should remain on the market for about half a year, during which the Sunnyvale company expects to complete the transition to the next-generation AM3 platform, designed to fit the needs of the new processor.
An article published by the guys from HKEPC shows both the names of the new Phenom II and Athlon parts scheduled for release at the beginning of the next year, as well as the market segments the chips are aiming at. It seems that the maker plans to release seven quad-core 45nm processors featuring core speeds ranging from 2.5GHz up to 3.0GHz. The 2.5GHz part would be Phenom II X4 805, which would also sport 6MB of cache, the same as the 2,6GHz Phenom II X4 810. Both chips are scheduled for February, along with the 2.6GHz Phenom II X4 910 with 8MB of cache.The other four Phenom II X4 chips are 920 running at 2.8GHz and 940 clocked at 3GHz, both featuring 8MB cache and coming on January 8th. The 2.8GHz Phenom II X4 925 comes in February as an AM3 part, the same as Phenom II X4 945 running at 3GHz, which will arrive in April next year with 8MB of cache.
Beside the quad-cores, AMD also plans launching two Phenom II X3 processors based on its code-named Heka chip, the Phenom II X3 710 featuring 2.6GHz and 7.5MB cache and Phenom II X3 720 with the same cache but 2.8GHz clock speed. Both chips are expected to arrive in February 2009. The Athlon series will include six processors based on the company's Propus, Rana and Regor cores, two for each of them. These chips will arrive in April and June next year, and quad, triple and dual-cores, respectively.

AMD plans to release six 45nm CPUs in February
Forget about chocolate, flowers, or diamonds, because the real buying decision come Valentine's Day will be what processor to indulge in. It's no stretch to say the entire tech world will remain infatuated with Intel's Core i7 platform by the time February rolls around, but Intel won't be the only one trying to woo consumers. According to DigiTimes, motherboard manufacturers are busy preparing for a sextuplet of 45nm quad-core AM3-based CPUs from AMD in February.* Phenom II X4 710 (2.6GHz, 6MB L3 cache)

Instead, look for Athlon-branded chips without the shared L3 cache. Additionally, the chip maker plans to release the quad-core Athlon X4 600 family and tri-core Athlon X3 family at the same time. And if you can wait until June, sources say AMD will introduce it's 45nm dual-core Athlon X2 200 series.

AMD has recently outlined the phase-out schedule for several of its Athlon 64 X2 CPUs, while the Athlon brand name will be re-purposed for upcoming dual-core CPUs based on the K10 core, according to sources at motherboard makers.AMD will stop taking orders for Athlon 64 X2 6400+ black edition and 89W version Athlon 64 X2 6000+ processors in the first quarter of 2008. Last orders for 125W Athlon 64 X2 6000+ and Athlon 64 X2 5600+ processors will be at the end of the first quarter, the sources detailed. AMD will also stop taking orders for Athlon 64 X2 4200+ and 4000+ processors by the end of this year and will launch a 65W Athlon 64 X2 4600+ clocked at 2.3GHz and with 1MB L2 cache in second quarter of 2008.
AMD will launch a new series of dual-core products based on its next-generation architecture, Athlon 6000, in the later half of second quarter next year. First to launch will be the Athlon 6250 and 6050, the sources revealed. Although the core frequencies of the two CPUs have not been set yet, they will adopt 1MB L2 cache and 2MB shared L3 cache, the sources added.

Rarely have things looked as good for Intel as they do right now. Exactly 18 months after the introduction of Intel's highly successful Core 2 CPUs, the chipmaker is updating them. It is shrinking the structures from 65 nm to 45 nm (Penryn refers to Intel's new family of 45 nm C
PUs, dual and quad core), and is already preparing the next step: the transition to the Nehalem platform. However, that's all still in the future, and won't come to pass until the end of 2008 at the earliest.
The revision of the Conroe architecture - in order to boost its performance, incorporate new instructions, and, most importantly, reduce power consumption - is right on schedule. Until now, Intel's Core 2 processors always played second fiddle to AMD's Athlon 64 X2 processors when it came to power consumption, at least in idle operation. That was also the reason why we built our Solar-Powered PC around an AMD platform. However, this situation has changed with the Penryn core of Intel's Core 2 Extreme QX9650.
Simultaneously, Intel has also made radical changes to its production process, breaking with the conventional method. Instead of producing MOSFET transistors inside the CPU via the conventional silicon-oxide technique in use since 1960, Intel now fabricates the transistors using a new High-K Dielectric technique. As a result, the Penryn core has improved over the previous CPU generation in several ways.
Before we begin, we should note the following about our tests. Since AMD was unable to supply us with a 4x4 system, we are using AMD's fastest dual-core processor, the Athlon X2 6400+ Black Edition, for this comparison instead. Of course the complex dual-socket system has practically no real presence in the market, but we nonetheless feel obligated to mention it, just to be fair. Also, we want you to understand why we are comparing Intel's quad-core CPU to a dual-core processor from AMD. For now, since we don't have any alternatives, it's the best we can do until Phenom arrives.
