As NVIDIA gears up to give GeForce GTS 250 a gala CeBIT launch, its partners seem to be ready with their products, and press-shots. Gigabyte will be one of the first to be out with a GeForce GTS 250 based graphics accelerator that uses the company's own design, GV-N250ZL-1GI. For those new, the GeForce GTS 250 is simply a re-launch of the NVIDIA's 9800 GTX+ accelerator. It is based on the same G92b core and uses identical specifications.

Gigabyte's first accelerator sports the Ultra Durable PCB construction. The PCB consists of 2 oz (56.6 g) copper layers that help spread heat and minimize ground electrical noise. It also consists of the all solid-capacitor, ferrite choke, low effective RDS on MOSFETs design. The most interesting featureof this card is its cooler: a Zalman VF1050. Heat is drawn from the GPU-contact block using four heatpipes that convey it to a dense array of copper fins, nucleated by a PWM-controlled fan. The clock speeds on this card remain close to the reference speeds: 740/1850/2000 MHz (core/shader/memory). It might hit the stores after NVIDIA makes the GPU official.

Gigabyte’s GA-EP45-DQ6 motherboard

If you don’t just like Gigabit ports—you love them— Gigabyte’s GA-EP45-DQ6 is the motherboard for you. This mobo has four Gigabit ports that can be teamed together for one seriously fat-ass network connection.

Elsewhere, the board is typical Gigabyte; it includes surface-mounted buttons and the most clearly marked USB and FireWire ports we’ve ever seen. So if you nuke your USB drive because you plugged the USB connector into a FireWire header, it’s your own fault, brother. The board, of course, is based on Intel’s new P45 chipset and sports two physical x16 PCI-E 2.0 slots. One runs at x16, the other at x8. Intel’s P45 doesn’t officially support 1,600MHz front-side bus speeds, but Gigabyte says the board will hit 1,600 without any issues. Since the GA-EP45-DQ6 is more of a midrange board, Gigabyte went with DDR2 instead of DDR3, which is understandable. Although it’s getting more affordable, DDR3 is still expensive if you want modules that will hit overclocked speeds of 1,600MHz or 1,800MHz.

We found no major layout gaffes with the board, and, in fact, favor the GA-EP45-DQ6’s design over that of the MSI P45 Platinum we reviewed in September. While the P45 Platinum gives you just two x1 slots, Gigabyte hands you two x4 slots and an x1 PCI-E, as well as the standard dual x16 slots.

The GA-EP45-DQ6 did lag behind the MSI P45 Platinum in several benchmarks. Some consumers will be troubled by this, but these performance hiccups are to be expected early in a motherboard’s release, and BIOS updates usually solve them.
So what’s not to like? The GA-EP45-DQ6 is a bit pricey for a P45 board—about $70 more than the faster, but not as well spec’d, P45 Platinum. And its price is within striking distance of X48-based boards, which are superior for CrossFire applications.

Still, if Gigabyte can correct the performance kinks, this is a pretty nice board for someone who isn’t running multi-GPU applications and, of course, just loves Gigabit ports.

Gigabyte launching power-saving Intel motherboards

By Koushik Saha on 23.1.08

Desktop processors have had power-regulation features for some time now, allowing them to scale clock speeds and voltages depending on loads. But what about motherboards? With its new Dynamic Energy Saver motherboards, Gigabyte has sought to carry that concept over into the motherboard world.

The Dynamic Energy Saver line includes three models based on Intel's X48 Express chipset, one based on the X38 Express chipset, and ten based on the P35 Express. A complete list is available in Gigabyte's press release. All 14 models feature a combination of hardware and software that allows the motherboard to dynamically switch power phases depending on processor load. The unique multi-gear power phase design of GIGABYTE's Dynamic Energy Saver allows for the most efficient switching of power phases depending on CPU workload. When the CPU workload is light or at idle, the Dynamic Energy Saver downshifts gears and only allows the minimum required power phases needed to accomplish the task to operate. By turning off the power phases that are not needed, GIGABYTE's Dynamic Energy Saver is able to dramatically save power, up to 70% compared to traditional motherboards, that would normally have been wasted. As soon as the workload increases, Dynamic Energy Saver recognizes that more power is needed and is able to shift into higher gear, turning on power phases as they are needed.

Gigabyte also cites efficiency improvements of up to 20%, and it says folks can use the technology to dynamically adjust processor voltage, as well.
