Round Rock, Texas-based Dell has recently announced the introduction of eight new tower, blade and rack-mount PowerEdge servers, designed to take advantage of the just introduced quad-core Opteron processors, designed by AMD. The new PowerEdge servers and blades build on AMD's 45nm-based quad-core Opterons, codenamed Shanghai, are meant to deliver better virtualization performance, and to help customers reduce IT complexity and costs."Dell understands how to give you the most compute power for your IT dollar. So, we've designed our AMD processor-based servers and blades to be powerful and virtualization-ready, but simple and affordable," said Brad Anderson, senior vice president, Dell's Business Product Group.
AMD's Shanghai Opteron processors are now powering Dell's two- and four-socket PowerEdge servers, including three of the PC vendor's blade servers, namely the M905, M805, M605. In addition, four of Dell's rack servers (R905, R805, 2970, SC1435) and one of its tower servers (T605) have also been featured with the new quad-core."AMD has worked hard to develop advanced virtualization capabilities as part of our new 45nm Quad-Core AMD OpteronTM processor," said Patrick Patla, vice president and general manager, Server and Workstation division, AMD. "We're glad that Dell has chosen to utilize our virtualization technology in new blade, rack and tower servers, leveraging unique-to-AMD features such as Rapid Virtualization Indexing (RVI) and AMD Extended Migration, to enable an extremely flexible IT environment that meets the needs of businesses of all sizes."
Some of the benefits brought by Dell's new PowerEdge server lineup include delivering improved performance, using Dell's Dual HT link designs, which are said to double the available bandwidth between two processors for what AMD estimates to be a 12 percent improvement. In addition, the new Dell server systems provide a better power efficiency, which is likely due to the 45nm process technology used in AMD's new quad-core processors.

Google's increasing dominance of Internet search and advertising is the rising fear that Google's broadening reach is giving it unchecked power. Consumer Watchdog, a non-profit consumer advocacy group, has called on Google?s founders and directors to adopt new privacy safeguards that allow for anonymous internet and software use.The group has created a You Tube video showing how your computer could be having an unnoticed conversation about you with Google.
Earlier this month Consumer Watchdog wrote the Justice Department to block Google's proposed advertising alliance with Yahoo based on these privacy concerns. The letter notes that the introduction of Google's new browser, known as "Chrome," without new privacy protections, poses an unprecedented threat to consumers. (Read it here.)
"Google's role is now unprecedented because the Internet goliath is no longer merely collecting some data about how we search and surf the web," said Consumer Watchdog president Jamie Court. "Its new browser and software are actually sending information from inside our computers to its servers. If Google won?t solve its own privacy problems, the company must be prepared for regulators to put the brakes on its unprecedented growth. State Attorneys General need to take action to protect consumers? privacy and make sure that computer users have the ability to opt-out of Google?s web and browse anonymously."
Consumer Watchdog spoke with Google's team last month about its concerns, but the company agreed to address only one of the smaller privacy problems uncovered in the video, the group said.
"Google claims users do not expect to be able to navigate the web anonymously, only to have anonymous moments, which is why Google does not have an easy to use privacy mode for its products," the group added.
The consumer group's concerns center on creating a simple anonymizing button across Google?s products and websites so that there is transparency and easy opt-out for those who did not wish to share their private data. Most computer users do not focus on the huge amounts of data sent to Google's servers, Consumer Watchdog said.
The introduction of Chrome, unless the privacy concerns are addressed seriously and quickly, could mark the end of real user control and choice online, the group claims. And that because Chrome allows new asynchronous communications to occurring without users' full understanding, consent or control. In addition, many Chrome features blur the distinction between the desktop and cloud computing, where a computer user?s software, documents, data and personal information exist not on the consumer?s hard drive but on Google's servers on the Internet, the group said.
Another of Consumer Watchdog's complaints surrounds Chrome's Incognito mode, which "lulls consumers into a false sense of security that their actions are completely private and free from prying eyes when in fact they are not."
"Chrome provides Google unprecedented dominance over the transmission of computer data and warrants higher privacy standards," wrote Consumer Watchdog President Jamie Court and Policy Advocate John Simpson. "Chrome represents a once-in-a decade opportunity to raise the consumer privacy bar to new heights that will benefit consumers, content providers, and ultimately Google itself."
To protect user privacy Consumer Watchdog said Google should:
- Place a single prominent button on the main Chrome interface that can't be hidden or removed and that allows a user to enter Incognito mode instantly without interrupting the user experience. Once in Incognito mode, the application should assume we want to stay incognito, essentially treating Incognito as a default preference once a user has selected it.
- Provide clear disclosure on the Google search engine home pages so that users can easily prevent communication with Google before pressing the search button or affirmatively requesting an action. This could be an extension of an omni-present "Incognito mode" button. This disclosure needs to be made clear throughout all the Google applications including GMail, Google Talk, and the Google Toolbar. This disclosure needs to be more than a confusing warning a few clicks away. It should be a convenient, actionable feature so that the user can exercise informed choice.
- Ensure that Incognito mode has the full meaning the word implies when users opt for it. Incognito mode should default to SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) connections, provide an automatic IP anonymizing service, enforce a no-log policy on all Google servers including Google Analytics, as well as disable auto-saving, suggestions, and all other feature that use asynchronous event handlers other than button and link click. Incognito should disable all external calls to desktop applications and plug-ins whose applications fail to meet equivalent standards
Although Chrome is new, Consumer Watchdog is not waiting to see whether it gets too little use to worry about. In October, Court's group wrote U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey to caution him about Google's plans to sell ads for Yahoo, saying that its fears about Google's market power have been exacerbated by Chrome's release.
"We look forward to your response and to working with Google to make the company the standard bearer for privacy on the Internet," Consumer Watchdog?s letter concluded.
Google said that it has been working to fix the "Incognito mode" issue, which does not prevent the browser from sending a request to Google to help determine the actual site the user is trying to visit, in case a user spell a Web site's address incorrectly.
In July, Google also began linking to its privacy policy on its home page. It also recently began its anonymization of the data it stores through the "Google Suggest" feature.
In September, to placate European Union data protection officials, Google said it would maintain its search logs for nine months instead of 18, as it had been doing. After that time, Google will alter IP addresses to mask their source.

A run time error usually occurs during the execution of a program due to an inherent bug in the program’s code that was either missed or was left unresolved during the program’s development. Additionally, runtime errors may occur due to program conflicts, faulty hardware, buggy software and device drivers, malware infections, or a damaged registry. These errors may also occur if certain conditions required for a program to work are not met.
For a better understanding, let us take a look at a couple of examples of runtime errors.
Error Message: “Runtime Error ‘429’: ActiveX Component Can't Create Object”
This error usually occurs if Microsoft Scripting Engine is not on your system and a program needs to access it. You can easily resolve this issue by downloading the latest version of Microsoft Script Installer from Microsoft MSDN Web site and then installing Microsoft Script Runtime from the Microsoft Windows Script components.ActiveX problems such as these may also occur if some of the entries for required DLL files are not registered correctly in the Windows registry. To resolve this issue, you may use a good registry cleaner to scan and repair the incorrect DLL entries within the Windows registry.
Error Message: “The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'your_e-mail_account',Server:'your_POP3_server', Protocol:POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): NO, Socket error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800ccc0e”
This error message is displayed when you try to use the email program on your system to send a message to a Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3) server. Error 10061 in this case occurs when the destination server—in this case the POP3 mail server—refuses the connection request. This happens if port 25 or port 110 used to send and receive messages respectively are blocked on your computer.
To resolve this issue you need to ensure that:
* Your internet connection is working normally.
* Your e-ail program is configured correctly.
* There are no suspicious or malicious e-mail messages in your email program.
* Your computer is not infected with a virus.
* You do not have an invalid email addresses in the contact list of your email program.
* Your firewall is not blocking traffic through ports 25 and 110—default ports to send and receive email messages.
There are several tasks that you can perform to prevent runtime errors from occurring on your system. Some of these are:
* Disable unwanted programs from loading at system startup. Many of these programs are not essential for Windows to run and are required only when you use the applications to which they belong. These startup programs may cause conflicts and also slow down your system. You can disable these programs using the System Configuration Utility (msconfig) or a third-party program uninstaller tool.
* Scan and remove any virus or spyware infections using efficient and updated antivirus and antispyware tools. These malicious infections may add buggy codes to your application executables and generate runtime errors.
* Prevent runtime errors that occur due to a damaged and filled up registry by regularly cleaning the registry database with the help of a good and user-friendly registry cleaner tool.
* Check your system hardware, especially the system memory, for problems. You can use a good PC diagnostics tools to perform this task.

As digital media increases in popularity, so will the demand for larger storage options, whether in the form of increased hard drives capacities or through the use of expandable network storage devices. The last time we broached the topic of NAS was with our article on two impressive SOHO units from QNAP. While not industrial strength solutions, both QNAP models offered a balance of hardware and software features that made them excellent solutions for both home and small business users. However, with the TS-101 being a single drive solution and the TS-201 being a two-drive option, they are limited when it comes to ease of expansion and growth in a user's storage needs. This is where the Thecus N5200BR NAS Server steps in.The Thecus N5200BR NAS Server targets end-users with more demanding network storage needs. To offer a more universal solution, Thecus designed the N5200BR with five SATA II bays supporting numerous RAID options, an LED status read-out, router capabilities and a host of other features to make it a serious contender for home users and in the commercial environment where a highly configurable NAS unit is a must. In the pages ahead, we'll look below the surface to ascertain the strengths and weaknesses of the Thecus N5200BR NAS Server, with a goal of providing a complete and clear picture of what a unit like this can deliver.Read d rest...
Overclocking Intel's Xeon X3320 processor
We PC enthusiasts have been co-opting enterprise-class hardware for our own personal systems for years now.
We got our first taste of the creamy smoothness of SMP on dual-socket workstation boards long before you could get two cores conveniently packaged on the same chip. Tempted by lightning-fast access times and 10K-RPM spindle speeds, we adopted Western Digital's Raptor hard drive. And who can forget AMD's Toledo-based dual-core Opterons—overclocking marvels compatible with the same 939-pin socket as Athlon 64 X2 desktop chips. I've had what was a relatively inexpensive Opteron 165 designed to run at 1.8GHz happily chugging away at 2.4GHz on a standard desktop motherboard for a couple of years now.
Although they share the same architecture and performance characteristics as their desktop counterparts,
server and workstation processors like the Opteron typically undergo additional validation testing and run at lower operating voltages. In a sense, chips that make the grade for the enterprise world are the best of the breed. That doesn't guarantee overclocking success, but it at least hints at untapped potential. When that potential plugs into a standard desktop motherboard loaded with overclocking options, we just can't resist. It's no wonder, then, that Intel's Xeon X3320 caught my eye recently. This LGA775 chip features a 45nm Yorkfield core running at 2.5GHz with 6MB of L2 cache, making it the Xeon equivalent of the Core 2 Quad Q9300. What's more, while the Q9300 has been in short supply of late, the X3320 has been more consistently available at roughly the same price.
Few things make us happier than forcing normally conservative enterprise-class hardware to jump through flaming enthusiast hoops, so we scored an off-the-shelf Xeon X3320 retail box from the folks at NCIX to see what kind of overclocking headroom we could find. Read on for the surprising results.

Unreal Tournament (UT) III Linux Server is finally available and the good news is that you don't need a retail copy of UT3 to host games.
The server comes as a complete package – a pretty large one, I may add – of 1.6 GB. After you download it, you must set the file as executable, and run it like an ordinary program. Although, you must have a Gamespy login to use the server. If you don't have one, you can create a free account quick and easy.
When you get the package, there are two ways to make it executable. The easy
way is to right click on the package and go to Properties -> Permissions. Check the "Execute" box, which will allow you to run the program. Or, if you are a console geek, open up a terminal and change to the directory where you downloaded the file. After you do this, type in the console:
and you will have the same results as in the easy way. After you make the UT III Server executable, run it. The application will unpack itself and the installation will begin.
UT 3 is a sequel of Unreal Tournament 2004, created by Epic Games, also known as Epic and formerly as Epic MegaGames, a computer game development company based in Cary, North Carolina, United States. Unreal Tournament was first released in 1998, and enjoyed a lot of popularity among gamers. It's main competitor at that time was Quake 3: Arena, a game produced by ID Software. Along with the game, Epic offered along a scripting language, specially designed for offering to the public the possibility to add modifications and enhancements to the game.
UT 3 has versions for all major operating systems and game consoles, like Mac OS, Linux, Windows, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. The idea to offer versions of the game for the forementioned OSes belongs to Mark Rein, Epic's Vice-President, who said that the game experience would not differ on any of these platforms, so everyone could fully enjoy Unreal Tournament.
