Sony Corp said on Thursday that it would launch a higher-capacity PlayStation 3 model in North America, as the company continues its effort to make its home console the digital hub of the living room.

The new 250 gigabyte PS3 will be available Nov. 3 for $349.99, giving consumers two configurations to choose from. The company's 120 GB PS3 sells for $299.99 following a recent price cut. Sony is battling with Microsoft Corp , maker of the Xbox 360 console, to become the leader in the digital distribution of content, including games and movies, in the home. John Koller, director of hardware marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America, said the company was seeing "significant traction" over the past year in distributing content over its PlayStation Network and that many people need more room to store all of it. "Consumers that are coming into the market want to be able to download and own HD movies, large-scalegames, those types of things on a hard drive." The new larger-capacity PS3 will be the same size as the existing model, known as the PS3 Slim. The 250 GB PS3 has already been announced in Asia and European markets. Sony is currently the No. 3 home console maker in the United States, behind Microsoft and Japan's Nintendo, maker of the Wii. Microsoft and Nintendo have also recently cut prices. Koller said Sony was "really bullish" on PS3's prospects for the holiday season, with demand exceeding its expectations. "A lot of retailers are continuing to ask us for more, more, more, and that's a good problem to have," Koller said. "... The $299 price drop has really instigated a tidal wave of consumers that have maybe been sitting on the sidelines."

Video game industry to celebrate merry Christmas

Is the video game industry recession proof?

At a time when retailers are struggling to sell merchandise leading up to Christmas less than one month away, video game makers have seen great success selling game consoles and video games.

Recently, October video game sales were up 18 percent -- up to $1.31 billion from $1.12 billion -- from the same time last year. Fable II led the way in October with 790,000 units sold throughout the month.

The Nintendo Wii continued its domination of the console market, with the Japanese company selling more than 13 million consoles since its launch in 2006. Microsoft has sold 12.1 million Xbox 360 units and Sony has sold just 5.1 million PlayStation 3 game consoles since launch.

Both the PS3 and Xbox 360 have had price cuts to help lure in new gamers, while the Wii is still being sold for $249. Even with its Blu-ray capabilities, the Wii and Xbox 360 are expected to be the top selling consoles -- the Xbox 360 will get a strong boost due to the recent release of the New Xbox Experience (NXE), which includes streaming Netflix.

In addition to October video game sales, the latest World of Warcraft expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, sold 2.8 million units in one day, which became the all-time one-day PC game sales leader.

Why all of the success for the video game industry?

"There are a couple of reasons," Hollywood Interactive Group director Ron Meiners told CNET. "One is the traditional value of entertainment during tough economic times. Like the great fantastic musicals in the 30s. Movies did great, because they took people's mind off of the troubles they were facing. (And) video games have great value as entertainment. The number of hours of solid entertainment that comes from a video game purchase is much greater than a movie, for example, for very comparable cost."Video games today offer gamers a level of interactivity and engagement that simply wasn't possible 10 years ago, which is important for game sales. If the economy continues to slide down hill, and Americans continue to be more careful with their money, it's likely video games and movies will be a good alternative to keep them distracted.

Although Blu-ray, HDTVs, and other consumer products have the necessary products and price cuts in place, the video game industry has the products but doesn't necessarily need to slash prices.

Nintendo introduced two limited edition Nintendo DS bundles for the holiday shopping season: Mario Red Nintendo DS and Ice Blue Nintendo DS. Japanese consumers now can get their hands on the Nintendo DSi, a next generation DS.

Sony also released its PSP 3000, a next-generation PSP aimed at competing with the newer DS game consoles.

Although other industries are expected to struggle, it's certainly a great time to be a gamer.

At the PlayStation experience held in Mumbai this weekend Atindriya Bose, Country Manager for Sony Computer Entertainment announced that the PSP 3000 would hit Indian shores this November for Rs. 9,490.
The fantastic feature of PSP-3000 is its enhanced screen, an upgraded version of the already high-quality screen of the PSP Slim & Lite. The screen is engineered to produce a wide range of colors, delivering more definition. The anti-glare technology considerably reduces the glare caused by sunlight and harsh indoor lighting.
PSP-3000’s built-in microphone brings the PSP even closer to the forefront of cutting-edge communications technology. Users can say goodbye to microphone leads and head-pieces and can now simply speak into their PSP to communicate online – all that's needed is a Wi-Fi connection.

Sony PSP-A proud gizmo to own

Sony PSP is the thing to look for.

First impression....
Absolutely amazing piece of hardware. The only color I had as an option was black..........I couldn’t take my eyes off for full 2 minutes when I first saw this gizmo, the shear built quality takes your breath away. Screen is HUGE, no matter how many images you have seen online but when you see the actual stuff, you seriously drop a jaw. It looks high tech, complicated, and beautiful. Screen specs....is a 4.3-inch widescreen TFT LCD that displays 16.77 million colors at a resolution of 480-by-272. The thing to note is 16.77 million colors and wide screen, makes movie viewing a pleasure, and when I say pleasure, it MEANS pleasure. It’s absolute DOT clear, the colors pop, and black is very black. The first time you see one of these in action you will be impressed with it, no question about it (of course you needs to know how to get the conversion done to PSP format, as quality seriously depends on that....more regarding conversion later). PSP includes two built in stereo speakers which in my opinion are poor, they are toooo mild and meek. You can only do casual gaming with them, for proper gaming or movies/music plug in the headphones(not bundled in the India Pack). Listening with headphones changes the entire dimension...... especially for games. It’s loud and sharp and you thoroughly enjoy your gaming with them.
As far as the storage goes, no inbuilt HDD, the only thing you have is the Sony/ScanDisk Mem Stick, on which u store all you movies/Games/songs/Snaps and Save data. So it’s got to be huge. 2 GB does the trick but I still say atleast 4 GB (No mem stick is included in the India Bundle, original is hard to afford, get a fake one but you got to have your PSP with you to try out coz 1 out of every 3 does not work. I got the 1GB for 1100 but only the third one worked).
