The preliminary mice that came into existence were track-ball based. I still remember the early Compaq Armada series laptops that would use track-ball mice to navigate the cursor. Now, the world has moved on to touch-sensitive pads and laser sensors. But there are a few applications where track-balls are preferred. For instance, large track-balls offer precision while working on CAD applications and can prove convenient to use in places that don't have desk space.
