Windows Vista users may recall a glitch in the software update that led them to an endless reboot cycle whenever they tried installing Vista Service Pack 1; this is about two months ago. Microsoft now says the problem stands fixed.
In February this year, Microsoft stopped offering its Servicing Stack Update (SSU) KB937287, which is one of the prerequisites for installing Vista SP1. The reason being many users complained about entering a hard-to-break reboot cycle during the installation process.Yesterday in a blog post on its Windows Update Product Team blog, Microsoft said that the problem with the SSU stemmed from 'a few unknown and rare events' during the installation process. Meaning Vista users who've already successfully installed the SSU have no reason to worry. While for those who haven't already installed the SSU, Microsoft is releasing a fix that will install before the SSU, helping ensure smooth installation of the SSU. The fix will install seamlessly through the Windows Update, Microsoft said. And for those using a stand-alone download of Vista SP1, Microsoft said the issues encountered will not affect the installation process at all.Meanwhile in a separate blog post, Chris Flores, a director on the Windows Client Team said that Microsoft remains 'on track' to begin distribution of the English, French, Spanish, German, and Japanese versions of Vista SP1 through its Automatic Update system middle of this month -- the same time it plans to roll out the initial release of Vista SP1 in the remaining languages.
